One Hundred Years of Solitude

The book's objective is to highlight the social and political issues in this newly formed town called Macondo with everything going in spirals leading to its eventual doom. Good objective but I am not fond of the execution in this book. First of all, very slow book. Secondly, many characters end up having the same name. This makes the book pretty irritating for me with all honestly. On the top of that, this book is filled with incest which isn't pleasant to read. Lastly, there is no major structure in this book so the reading experience is terrible with this one.

As Melquiades excites Buendia's father with new inventions and tales of adventure, neither can know the significance of the indecipherable manuscript that the gypsy passes into their hands. The tribulations of the Buendia household push memories of the manuscript aside. Few remember its existence and one will discover the message that it holds.

Maybe it's long, complicated, and it's easy to get lost if you make a long pause (couple hours =)) but author surely keeps you "on needles" all the time. Just when you think everything has ended something new is anounced and you are again in a fanastic story were realism and surealism make you think everything is possible cause in this story everything perfectly makes sense.
Not boring but challenging. I dare you to read it =)

Pablo Neruda dijo... «El Quijote de nuestro tiempo.»

Now I know why they call this novel a masterpiece

Tells the story of the Buendia family, set against the background of the evolution and eventual decadence of a small South American town

ggm you sicko. witty and melodic prose you cannot stop reading. tale(s) of generational trauma, the oedipean oracle and various attempts to subvert it, nietzsche's eternal return, freud's compulsion to repeat, and closed loops

This book was such a journey. The first 40% flew by but then I got caught in this slump in the middle and nearly DNF'd it. The final 30% picked up again and I do understand why so many people talk about the last chapter giving the book more meaning. Was it an interesting read? Yes. Do I think it deserves the hype and "intellectual" recommendations it receives? No. If that makes me not cool or smart enough then I don't care. I was not confused at any point, I just don't think there is anything groundbreaking enough to warrant the title. Glad I pushed through but won't be reading again or recommending

For any fiction lover, this is a must read. A literature classic that is a fantastical journey into the lives of the Buendía family. A must read!

"The need to feel sad was becoming a vice as the years eroded her. She became human in her solitude."

"He really had been through death, but he had returned because he could not bear the solitude."

Finally got around to reading this great classic! Partial credit goes to my PI 100 prof who lowkey raved about the book. At first, it was a tough read. Marquez's worldbuilding infused with imagery and magical realism was definitely unlike anything I've read before (not that I have much experience). Also, that darn Buendía family tree with all the same names! But it got easier to distinguish them eventually...

I wouldn't call this a favorite of mine because I'm not sure if I've grasped the novel well enough in its entirety—but my takeaway is how every Buendía member is extremely lonely. Case in point: it's impossible to count the number of times "solitude" is inscribed in the text. Nevertheless, it doesn't come off as redundant because the way Marquez describes each member's experience with solitude feels so intimate and unique.

The book is a thorough examination on the rise and fall of the Buendía family; I just know I'll be thinking about the ending for a long time. What an epic way to wrap up this cult masterpiece.

so magical, deeply tragic, and a lot funnier than i was expecting. i will never experience a book like this again
