I struggled to finish it a lot. It failed to go in the detail I expected as it just denied the voices of an existence of a truly free market. <br /><br />The theory and the stories were not hard to follow but it lacked a lot in tying back to the title, to the overarching question. <br /><br />Didn’t have luck in reaching for a good economics-tied book for a while, hope this changed soon!

Chatty, thoughtful introduction to some hard truths of economic development. Not actually anti-capitalist, except in the mild sense that we all should be (that is, critical of market failure, cronyism, corporate welfare and socialised risk, regulatory capture, negative-sum nationalism, casino capital, ...).

The soundest and most important of the 23 points is the surprising fact that no currently-developed economy ever managed to industrialise without initially using trade barriers. (This is covered better in Chang's Kicking Away the Ladder, with its extensive details of postwar South Korea's shocking illiberalism: for instance, importing hi-tech goods was a serious crime for decades.) This wasn't well-known even in the Development circles I was moving in. 

The other propositions, I can't remember well enough to endorse or deny, but it left a vague good impression.

أسرد هنا فقط بعض النقاط التي استرعت انتباهي لأتذكرها لاحقا

- لا يوجد اقتصاد حر مطلق، هناك اقتصاد مقيد بقوانين و قواعد يصنعها السياسيون

- سياسة جعل الأغنياء أكثر غناءا لا تضمن بالضرورة نشاط اقتصادي أكثر يعود بالنفع على المواطنين الأقل حظا فيصبحوا أكثر غناءا بالمقارنة

- الانترنت و غسالة الملابس قاموا بتغيير الحياة البشرية الى الأفضل كل بنسبة متفاوتة. الا ان الغسالة و معظم الأدوات المنزلية ساعدت البشرية على ترقية الحياة بشكل أفضل بكثير مما فعلت الانترنت

- السياسات النقدية القادمة من الدول المتقدمة فعليا أو من البنك الدولي لا تصلح للدول الصاعدة الراغبة في التقدم. السياسات السيئة السمعة مثل الحماية و عدم احترام الملكية الفكريةالتي تدعي الدول المتقدمة اقتصاديا ان محاربتها هي السبيل الى التقدم، هي نفس السبيل التي أتبعتها الدول المتقدمة في بداية نهضتها !!!

- ثقافة ريادة الأعمال متواجدة بوفرة في الأفراد في الدول النامية بنسبة أعلى مما هو موجود في الدول المتقدمة.

Ha-Joon Chang dispels the myths and prejudices that have come to dominate our understanding of how the world works. He succeeds in both setting the historical record straight ('the washing machine has changed the world more than the internet'; 'the US does not have the highest living standard in the world'; 'people in poor countries are more entrepreneurial than people in rich countries') and persuading us of the consequences of his analysis ('making rich people richer doesn't make the rest of us richer'; 'companies should not be run in the interest of their owners'; 'financial markets need to become less, not more, efficient'). As Chang shows above all else, all economic choices are political ones, and it is time we started to be honest about them.
