Old Enough

A lot to process for me with this one. Hard to impartially review it. But I will say that the author and I have a lot in common. I loved the dedication to survivors. ❤️

Katelyn Caillouet

A debut novel about a young bisexual woman who is pulled between a new sense of community and loyalty to a friendship she's outgrown

Savannah Sav Henry is almost the person she wants to be, or at least she's getting closer. It's the second semester of her sophomore year. She's finally come out as bisexual, is making friends with the other queers in her dorm, and has just about recovered from her disastrous first queer "situationship." She is cautiously optimistic that her life is about to begin.

But when she learns that Izzie, her best friend from childhood, has gotten engaged, Sav faces a crisis of confidence. Things with Izzie haven't been the same since what happened between Sav and Izzie's older brother when they were sixteen. Now, with the wedding around the corner, Sav is forced to reckon with trauma she thought she could put behind her.

On top of it all, Sav can't stop thinking about Wes from her Gender Studies class--sweet, funny Wes, with their long eyelashes and green backpack. There's something different here--with Wes and with her new friends (who delight in teasing her about this face-burning crush); it feels, terrifyingly, like they might truly see her in a way no one has before.

With a singularly funny, heartfelt voice, Old Enough explores queer love, community, and what it means to be a sexual assault survivor. Haley Jakobson has written a love letter to friendship and an honest depiction of what finding your people can feel like--for better or worse.

was this also full of community lingo and littered with dialogue akin to what you might find on tumblr or fanfiction? yes. was i hopelessly endeared regardless? yes! now you (future me) may look back at this versus my review of dykette and think it's not adding up and all i have to say that this was delightfully earnest. i wanted to hang out with them! it was easy at some times and heartbreaking at others and in the end i just felt i was enveloped into the situation rather than poised to observe.

is this indicative of my own placement in my journey? probably but what is fiction if not a funhouse mirror that forces you not to look away. i don't have anything profound to say - i think it delivered exactly what was promised and i had a good time :)

( I listened to the audiobook of this so I will also be talking about the narrator's performance)

I have so much love for this book that I can't put it into words so I will say this. this book means so much to me it taught me things about myself, it made me realize things I may not have realized as soon as I did if I had not read it. I went through a friend break-up very similar to Sav's though certain events happened in the opposite order, it still helped me feel seen. this book made me so emotional, immediately after I finished it I sat curled up in the guest room at my aunt's house holding back sobs. along with all those things I found my name in this book and for that reason I will forever be grateful for its existence and it will always hold a special place in my heart and so will Wes the character I got my name from.

Jenna Kay did a wonderful job bringing the characters to life and telling Sav's story
