Great book, especially to listen to. I actually really enjoyed the first half, since it was really interesting to learn about their experiences as a child. Hannah is definitely an artist, and it shows through their intentional writing and well-placed humor.

The first half was a struggle to get through, but it was worth it. Even though comedy is not really my thing, I  watched Nanette years ago, and damn it is all the more impressive now that I have some small understanding of what went into creating it.

Hannah Gadsby always dreamt of being a cool kid but she had to accept that, just like her childhood dream of being a dog, 'normal' isn't always possible. In the vein of David Sedaris, Hannah's memoir is a string of stories that draws together the varied funny and sometimes dark events of her life, compelling readers to understand the damage society can visit upon those (like Hannah) who find themselves on the outside.

Listened to this as an audiobook and it was perfect. I don’t think I would have enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed listening to it. Hannah Gadsby is an amazing narrator and the audiobook includes excerpts from the Netflix special which makes it even more enjoyable. 

The first half of the book is about Hannah Gadsby’s childhood. It was hilarious and I was laughing out loud at times. I was spending every free minute of my day listening to it and it was a wonderful escape from every day life. I loved imagining a tiny Hannah eating fish and chips with this big family. 

The second half was a lot heavier which made it harder to listen to, I am not going to lie. Especially because I was actively avoiding listening to the news to escape traumatic events and I found myself in the middle of Gadsby’s trauma. Of course I knew what Gadsby has gone through and I have watched Nanette several times but I feel like I only understood how hard it was on her when I was listening to this audiobook. 

I am a fan of memoirs and I listened to many including Obama’s (both) and this was my favourite audiobook and favourite memoir so far.

I had a hard time staying focused on this book.

I really enjoyed watching Nanette and so it was great reading about Hannah's experiences in detail. However, I feel like a lot of chapters could've been cut down to be more straightforward.
