'Kissen,' Inara said, tentatively. She was real. She was completely real. No dream could smell so bad. Inara grabbed her back, holding on for safety, for terror and grief. 

She held her, tightly, as tight as she could hold a thing, and Kissen held her back as if she could use her body to shield her from the world. Lessa didn't come to her, Lessa didnt move. 

'And kicking,' Kissen said. 'Barely. I'm so sorry, I tried... I tried to come back to you.'

'I did love you,' snarled Elo, advancing. His arm was still bleeding, losing feeling. 'I stood at your side through death and ruin. I put you on a throne above all others, and I will not watch you use it to trample the world!'

'I'm coming with you,' said Yatho, putting on her brakes.

Elo shook his head. 'Legs cant take the chair.'

'I'm not an idiot.' Yatho winced as she stood, picking up both her hammers. 'But nothing is going to stop me finding my wife.'

Naia did not look impressed. She muttered something that sounded very much like 'Gods save us from bloody men.'

She didnt kill people. That was a promise she had made herself over and over. It was the gods' fault, not the people's. She was not a knight; she was a rat-catcher of the deities. Shrine-breaker, prayer-queller, briddite-wielder. Doubt gnawed at her heart. Kissen was not used to doubt.

"The standing army were promised pensions,' Antoc said. 'By the king's previous knight commander.' He cast a glance at Arren. 'I see fewer ships, fewer stalls in the market, fewer delegates from our neighbour lands. I have eyes, and a mind to use them.' 

'You also have a sharp tongue that likes wagging,' said Arren. 'Careful it doesn't cut your mouth.'

The silence that followed was full of daggers.

As much as I enjoyed this book, I can see why some people felt it was a little flat compared to the first one. I think I struggle with second books and find them to be slower as they tend to try to set a lot up for the final book.

One thing I did like about this was the added pov. I always find myself wishing that authors would show more povs from characters I like so I was pleasantly surprised to have that in this book.

I'm not sure if I will read the next one so I will wait to see other reviews from it before I give it a shot.
