The First Daughter is for the Throne
The Second Daughter is for the Wolf...

Red and the Wolf have finally contained the threat of the Old Kings but at a steep cost. Red's beloved sister Neve, the First Daughter is lost in the Shadowlands, an inverted kingdom where the vicious gods of legend have been trapped for centuries and the Old Kings have slowly been gaining control. But Neve has an ally—though it's one she'd rather never have to speak to again—the rogue king Solmir. 

Solmir wants to bring an end to the Shadowlands and he believes helping Neve may be the key to its destruction. But to do that, they will both have to journey across a dangerous landscape in order to find a mysterious Heart Tree, and finally to claim the gods' dark, twisted powers for themselves.

No one was wholly one or the other. Goodness was daily choice, endless possibility, a decision at every crossroads.

“…but there are always people who can access more power than others, and those people will always try to use it to evil ends.”

"I already am," she snarled. Then Neve pushed her severed finger into where Valchior's eye should be, god-bone cutting easily through stone.

Saving someone else was a wall you couldn’t scale unless they threw you a rope.

“The moral," she said finally, “is to make the most of the time you have, because chances are it will be shorter than you think."

“I think that’s when I realized how little it mattered,” she said quietly. “The title, the power… you’re just somewhere for it to rest. The wheel of the kingdom keeps turning, whether you sit on the throne or someone else does.”

Important things often hurt, Shadow Queen. You know that.

She's taken the first step in becoming your mirror. Taken the power of a dark god, taken shadow where you took light. The two of you are too strong for mere glass to connect you anymore.

“That’s the trouble with religion,” Neve said. “Tying the reason for your existence to a god seems to naturally lead to your existence not mattering much.”

“Love devolves very quickly into horror when gods are involved.”

I was like you once, the Seamstress continued. A human girl, caught in the webs beyond my imaging. The Weaver looked so different on the surface, but I loved it enough to follow it into exile. And by the time I saw its true form, it was beautiful to me, for I’d been changed, too. She paused. Monstrousness is a curious thing. In its barest form, its simplest definition, a monster is merely something different than you think it should be. And who gets to decide what we should be anyway?

“You know that isn’t true. You made the choices that led you here, Neverah. They’re yours as much as they are hers. You could’ve run from it, but the two of you are for the Wolf and for the throne, and such things have a way of finding you even if you hide.”

Damn him for being handsome. Life would be so much simpler if all monsters looked the part.

Red entangled with a monster, and Neve with a fallen god.

A small part of Neve had been meanly satisfied to see that, to see Red trying to get her as desperately as Neve had been trying all those months.

You think love is so difficult. Such a fraught thing. But sometimes, it can be simple, even when everything around it is not

Really wanted to love it, but the characters all fell flat for me and it was way too draggy

Too long and magic system wasn't clear.  A lot of traveling for travelings sake it seemed.

i wanted to love this as much as i loved the 1st book, but i feel like the beginning + end of the book just didn’t hit for me. that being said i definitely cried about 5-6 times in the middle/middle-end of the book.

4.25 The first book I enjoyed but didn’t quite hit the point where I could really get into it and honestly it’s been long enough that I don’t fully remember what happened in it. But now reading this second one, I’m wondering if I just didn’t read the first one when I was in the right mood cause I thoroughly enjoyed this one more and could immerse myself in it. The book has a great atmospheric feel to it and I this part of the story just felt like it had more weight to it. I think my only complaint to the duloagy would be that the magic system and world building was just not as easy to digest and put together for me to fully give it a 5 but I very much enjoyed this book.

Loved this sequel! Liked it more than the first, but likely because the world was established and less dragging on with world building. Solmir was a pleasant addition. Nothing like the love between two sisters. As it started, it will end.

Well, overall it was a really nice trilogy ! Atmospheric, full of Magic, and gods. With a touch of originality.

The romance was heartwarming and I liked that in this one we focused on Neve's part of the intrigue.

One for the Wolf and One for the Throne indeed.

Still, I've struggled a bit with the pacing. I really enjoyed Neve's POV and her quest with Solmir. It was interesting to follow them around and see their love flourish and grow. 

 However, some chapters with Red and Eamon felt like a bit unnecessary at the beginning. A lot of their chapters was about looking back at events of book 1 and how they wish they did things differently. I was like we get it, let's move on and act. That was the repetitive part for me.

And honestly, just like book 1 the writing style made me loose my attention in some parts of the story 😅😂. I don't know why it felt heavy to read even though technically it wasn't. I guess it's a me thing on that part.

Anyway, I'm happy I looked past the imperfections and saw the conclusion of this magical story.
