Across the different titles I’ve read from Banana Yoshimoto, one leitmotif of hers continues to intrigue me: sleep. In her hands, sleep is never just a biological need—it’s a liminal space, a threshold where the boundaries between the living and the dead dissolve. It allows for communication, confrontation, and sometimes, reconciliation. The protagonist’s dreams and half-awake states become conduits for supernatural encounters, revealing deeper truths about grief, guilt, and the persistence of memory. In

, Yoshimoto explores this idea with particular sharpness. The nameless heroine is on a short excursion in a small hot spring town. On her way through the mountains, she comes across a strange, dilapidated shrine—home to a nameless entity. Unbeknownst to her, the entity attaches itself to her and brings a string of misfortunes: a terrible udon joint she visits later that day catches fire, and an eerie, melancholic ghost woman appears at her hotel room in the dead of night. While dealing with the aftermath of these events, the protagonist begins to recall her late lover, Chizuru, who shared the same supernatural sensitivity. one of banana's more tenebrous and death-centric works, for sure. i don't know how to describe the emotion evoked except that it felt like floating on the resonance of a minor chord, drawn out almost to completion. also, the deep autumnal backdrop was very timely; unlike the glittering summer of goodbye tsugumi, the season painted here is pensive and gloomy, but not yet entirely lost to winter.
