To Kill a Mockingbird

Not too sure if i’ll finish - probably because I can’t leave a page folded in my cupboard. 

Slightly too slow for me, the old writing a bit confusing (and my lack of vocabulary) as well as the blatantly excused racism has let it down, although I expect as I continue it may pick up.

How do US Americans have such beautiful, complex classics that teach them morality and kindness, and yet have not banked in creating this kind of image in front of the rest of the world?

I found this to be a book so full of empathy that I struggle to see how it would not inspire any in anyone who has ever come into contact with it. It wears its themes on its sleeve in the way many classic novels do - elegantly, confidently, gently. It enquires how hate is created - that it is learned, that it comes from ignorance, that sometimes hard lives can make us worse people, but most of all asks each reader to examine their own behaviour.

It is inevitable to say, I guess, that there is a reason - unfortunately - for "To Kill a Mockingbird" to remain ever relevant. And all I wish for is that we could only learn.
