Still the same evenly-paced historical thriller promised by the first installment, with raised stakes now that Cicero has become consul. He divides his time between maintaining the precarious balance of power between senators, foiling his assassination, and rescuing the Roman Republic from collapse. Conspirata covers the second Catilinarian conspiracy, one of the highlights of Cicero's harrowing career, bringing the urgency and danger with a sense of immediacy, as if it were contemporary history being narrated. While Tiro is rightly still on the fringes as narrator as before, he gets his own subplot that makes him even more interesting and likeable.
