Max and Onno are inseparable...until Max meets the beautiful and gifted cellist Ada, and introduces her to Onno. Zelf kon hij trouwens niet lachen, - althans, hij lacht nooit; hij heeft zijn persoonlijkheid opgebouwd rondom het besluit, nooit te lachen. Daar wordt vaak om gelachen, ofschoon men zelden huilt om iemand die nooit huilt.

Is het je wel eens opgevallen, dat mensen vaak veel weten van dingen waar ze weinig mee te maken hebben, maar weinig van de dingen waar ze veel mee te maken hebben?

Voor de context de hoofdpersoon is hier zo dronken dat hij de schrijver dubbel ziet.

'Hoe is het toch godsmogelijk, dat iemand een roman kan fantaseren?'

'Ik fantaseer nooit iets,' zeiden de twee monden koel. 'Ik herinner het mij. Ik herinner mij dingen,die nooit gebeurt zijn. Net als jij wanneer je mijn roman leest.'

Ik begin ondertussen haast het hele boek te quoten.

Zelf zou hij zich nooit laten cremeren; dat was hem veel te definitief 

Als je eindelijk hebt bereikt wat je wilde bereiken, is het niet meer wat je wilde bereiken, maar eenvoudig datgene wat je hebt bereikt. Dan is het vanzelfsprekend geworden. Wat je wint verlies je eigenlijk, welbeschouwd.

'Het komt bijna nooit voor,' had Max naderhand gezegd, 'dat de politie iets kan doen. Behalve joden ophalen - dat konden ze heel goed.'

Alleen wanneer zij alleen was had zij het gevoel, dat zij werkelijk bestond; andere mensen waren misschien juist bang voor dat besef, maar zij was eerder bang voor andere mensen omdat zij haar dat besef ontstalen.

Hij hoorde niet meer bij de mensen, hij dacht alleen nog over hen na.
