“I!” said Aragog, clicking angrily. “I was not born in the castle. I come from a distant land. A traveler gave me to Hagrid when I was an egg. Hagrid was only a boy, but he care d for me, hidden in a cupboard in the castle, feeding me on scraps from the table. Hagrid is my good friend, and a good man. When I was discovered, and blamed for the death of a girl, he protected me. I have lived here in the forest ever since, where Hagrid still visits me. He even found me a wife, Mosag, and you see how our family has grown, all through Hagrid’s goodness….”

Harry summoned what remained of his courage.

“So you never – never attacked anyone?”

“Never,” croaked the old spider. “It would have been my instinct, but out of respect for Hagrid, I never harmed a human. The body of the girl who was killed was discovered in a bathroom. I never saw any part of the castle but the cupboard in which I grew up. Our kind like the dark and the quiet….”

“Strangers,” clicked the spider who had brought Ron.

“Kill them,” clicked Aragog fretfully. “I was sleeping….”

“It’s all over,” he said. “I’m going to have to turn you in, Rubeus. They’re talking about closing Hogwarts if the attacks don’t stop.”

“I don’t think you meant to kill anyone. But monsters don’t make good pets. I suppose you just let it out for exercise and –”

“It never killed no one!” said the large boy, backing against the closed door. From behind him, Harry could hear a funny rustling and clicking.

“Come on, Rubeus,” said Riddle, moving yet closer. “The dead girl’s parents will be here tomorrow. The least Hogwarts can do is make sure that the thing that killed their daughter is slaughtered….”

“It wasn’t him!” roared the boy, his voice echoing in the dark passage. “He wouldn’! He never!”

“Stand aside,” said Riddle, drawing out his wand.

“You live in a Muggle orphanage during the holidays, I believe?” said Dippet curiously.

“Yes, sir,” said Riddle, reddening slightly.

“Half-blood, sir,” said Riddle. “Muggle father, witch mother.”

“My mother died just after I was born, sir. They told me at the orphanage she lived just long enough to name me – Tom after my father, Marvolo after my grandfather.”

Dippet clucked his tongue sympathetically.

“I mean that this diary holds memories of terrible things. Things that were covered up. Things that happened at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.”

“That’s where I am now,” Harry wrote quickly. “I’m at Hogwarts, and horrible stuff’s been happening. Do you know anything about the Chamber of Secrets?”

His heart was hammering. Riddle’s reply came quickly, his writing becoming untidier, as though he was hurrying to tell all he knew.

“Of course I know about the Chamber of Secrets. In my day, they told us it was a legend, that it did not exist. But this was a lie. In my fifth year, the Chamber was opened and the monster attacked several students, finally killing one. I’d caught the person who’s opened the Chamber and he was expelled. But the headmaster, Professor Dippet, ashamed that such a thing happened at Hogwarts, forbade me to tell the truth. A story was given out that the girl had died in a freak accident. They gave me a nice, shiny, engraved trophy for my trouble and warned me to keep my mouth shut. But I knew it could happen again. The monster lived on, and the one who had the power to release it was not imprisoned.”

The ink shone brightly on the paper for a second and then, as though it was being sucked into the page, vanished. Excited, Harry loaded up his quill a second time and wrote, “My name is Harry Potter.”

The words shone momentarily on the page and they, too, sank without a trace. Then, at last, something happened.

Oozing back out of the page, in his very own ink, came words Harry had never written.

“Hello, Harry Potter. My name is Tom Riddle. How did you come by my diary?”

These words, too, faded away, but not before Harry had started to scribble back.

“Someone tried to flush it down a toilet.”

Hearing voices no one else can hear isn’t a good sign, even in the wizarding world.

So Dobby stopped us from getting on the train and broke your arm….You know what, Harry? If he doesn’t stop trying to save your life he’s going to kill you.

Harry Potter survived, and the Dark Lord’s power was broken, and it was a new dawn, sir, and Harry Potter shone like a beacon of hope for those of us who thought the Dark days would never end. 

“I never knew that,” said Hermione, looking at Ron in surprise. “You’ve used spiders in Potions loads of times…”

” said Ron, who was carefully looking anywhere but at the window. “I just don’t like the way they move….”

For a few years, the founders worked in harmony together, seeking out youngsters who showed signs of magic and bringing them to the castle to be educated. But then disagreements sprang up between them. A rift began to grow between Slytherin and the others. Slytherin wished to be more 

 about the students admitted to Hogwarts. He believed that magical learning should be kept within all-magic families. He disliked taking students of Muggle parentage, believing them to be untrustworthy. After a while, there was a serious argument on the subject between Slytherin and Gryffindor, and Slytherin left the school."

Professor Binns paused again, pursing his lips, looking like a wrinkled old tortoise.

"Reliable historical sources tell us this much," he said. "But these honest facts have been obscured by the fanciful legend of the Chamber of Secrets. The story goes that Slytherin had built a hidden chamber in the castle, of which the other founders knew nothing.

Slytherin, according to legend, sealed the Chamber of Secrets so that none would be able to open it until his own true heir arrived at the school. The heir alone would be able to unseal the Chamber of Secrets, unleash the horror within, and use it to purge the school of all who were unworthy to study magic.

“Enemies of the Heir, beware! You’ll be next, Mudbloods!”

It was Draco Malfoy. He had pushed to the front of the crowd, his cold eyes alive, his usually bloodless face flushed, as he grinned at the sight of the hanging, immobile cat.

I don't have much to say besides, I'm glad I don't have to think too much about Gilderoy anymore.

Honestly you can't beat this nostalgia!!! Full potter head and hufflepuff but haven't read the full series yet and haven't read the first few since elementary school lol. I love getting deeper into learning the characters and really enjoying the world building. I've been annotating and tabbing this book while I'm reading and it's really fun!!

always found this to be the weakest in the series, and looks like it hasn’t changed. i did enjoy seeing small clues for later important plots in the series being mentioned, and i do think one thing that’s really well done is the general atmosphere of everyday life at hogwarts. but plot-wise this has just never worked that well for me. i’m also already exhausted of villain monologues. voldemort talks too much that’s why he never gets the job done.

This was miles better then the first book. Having seen the movies I was very afraid I’d never enjoy the books much due to knowing what happens. But I was wrong. This book was fantastic.

Being a mystery fan, this book was just right up my alley. It almost felt like a slow burn at times in terms of how much the main storyline moved along, but at the same time since the main trio was always up to some trouble it never really got boring and the payoff to the buildup was great. I honestly did not remember who the culprit was and how they did it and it was fascinating going trough it again, specially with that much more detail and explanation that they give out in the book compared to the movie.

Overall this just worked for me, both from a character standpoint (I already knew the characters and they spent less time antagonizing Hermione in a not so funny way, which made me get attached to everyone) and from a story standpoint, where the actual main plot was very evident in this one, whereas as the first book was more introductory, the plot was much more all over the place.

I've said it before & I'll say it once again: If Harry Potter is good when you read it for the first time, it only gets better when you reread it.

Jim Dale is mind-blowing. Harry Potter are the first audiobooks I've ever listened to, but I know no one will every be as a good narrator as he is. He gives a different tones to each character, not just reading their lines, but acting them. He seriously adds to the whole experience. 

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Harry Potter & I definitely think the audiobooks deserve to be heard as much as the books deserve to be read.

funfact: this was the first harry potter book i read when i was little (i think i didn't have the first book back then, so i skipped it)

(3/5) me gustó mucho como se describe la amistad entre ron, harry y hermione y también me gusta la descripción de las relaciones entre otros personajes, como la familia weasley por ejemplo. hablando de la historia y el misterio resuelto, me gustó más que el del primer libro, aunque creo que la resolución podría haberse dado antes. de todos modos, el libro se lee realmente rápido, dado que las descripciones son simples y concisas y además la historia cuenta con mucho diálogo.

algo que realmente me molestó a lo largo de la historia fue la necesidad de jkr de darnos un montón de explicaciones de cosas que se supone que ya sabemos porque ocurrieron en el libro anterior, y también que se nos volviera a presentar a casi todos los personajes de cero, como si ya no los conociéramos a ellos ni a su historia (es decir, entiendo que me explique quien es el profesor binns, pero que se nos presentara de nuevo incluso la historia de harry se me hizo bastante pesado y repetitivo).

en general fue un libro entretenido, fácil de leer y que te hace encariñarte aún más con los personajes, ya sean principales o secundarios.

Soon other worries accumulate: the outrageously stuck-up new professor Gilderoy Lockhart; a ghost named Moaning Myrtle, who haunts the girls' bathroom; the strange behavior of Ron's little sister, Ginny Weasley; rumors about the "Chamber of Secrets," a cavern buried deep below Hogwarts; and a magical diary owned by Tom Riddle, a Hogwarts student of long ago. Harry is also shocked to discover that he can speak Parseltongue, the language of snakes - a rare ability that Lord Voldemort also possessed - and that anti-Muggle prejudice exists in the Wizarding world, even affecting Harry's friend Hermione. Another great book read by Stephen fry with his amazing voices. This wasn't my favourite book in the series, but it was still pretty great! I enjoyed the ending ❤️

Friends found me strange. They reckoned that I was being haughty and that I found 'Harry Potter' juvenile. But the truth was that I had no clue about why I didn't read Harry Potter for so long. Honestly!

Today, after I finished 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets', I came here to give my score. And, I stumbled upon this quote that substantiated (well! Almost!) my reason for not befriending Harry Potter when the books were a rage.

Now, after having read two books, I admit that I had missed a lot in life.

trouble's stirring and everyone's pinning the blame on poor ol' Harry. of course, good ol' Harry saves the day but little does he know what's really in it for him.

It’s quite known that her books are good but she’s still a horrible person so I won't be giving her 5 stars. Also I feel like reading this after watching the movie made it a little bit boring. I would’ve enjoyed it more if I had read it first.

Tom Marvolo Riddle being an anagram for “I am Lord Voldemort” was the greatest gag of 1998.

This was more like 3.5 read for me. It’s basically the same plot as the first book, but without the magic of being the first book. It does do a great job at expanding the wizarding world and the threat of Lord Voldemort and remarkably avoids the sophomore slump. But it doesn’t feel very fresh.
