Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is my ultimate comfort read; I adored every second. It's one of those books I'll revisit for many years and my go-to book for getting out of a reading slump.

I have lost count of how many times I've read the first four Potter books (I've read all of them several times but the first four has something special.) This time was sparked by watching Fantastic Beasts at the cinema and wanting to read something that in no way could end up being research for my Master's Thesis. I needed something that I could just breeze through. Reading it feels like being wrapped up in the most comfortable and warm blanket. Like going home. It never ceases to amaze me that this is a debut novel.

Read this for the first time since I was probably around 10 years old, and it felt like the very first time. 

The Wizarding World in Harry's eyes is beyond enchanting. There is so much life, so much history, so many little otherwise insignificant little details that just make this world all the more tangible. Choosing to read the Minalima edition of this book adds to this immersiveness and pairs so well with the playfulness and quirk of this world and everything in it. 

I adore Harry and his story. He's so used to being on the outside, being left alone, being unloved. In the wizarding world, the love he receives is overwhelming, the love the friends he made has for him is unfathomable. The kindness and bravery displayed in helping others he witnesses getting bullied is adorably heroic. 

I'm excited to revisit the rest of this series :D

It is embarrassing how long its been since I last read this book. As I've heard great things about the audio version of this book I decided to try it out & I must admit I am pleasantly surprise with how much I loved it.

Jim Dale is the perfect reader & J.K. Rowling's writing comes magically to life with his narration. 

If reading Harry Potter for the first time is amazing, it is much better to reread them knowing what's going to happen in the future & how J. K Rowling foreshadows so many things. 

If possible my love for this series has grown & I recommend for all Harry Potter fans to listen to this books as well as read them.

Centaurs got no chill. Also: the amor ex machina plot device would've been so much cooler if Harry could spout righteous fire from his wand made from hot, holy love.

I get it now. I understand why this book is so deeply loved by so many people. It's MAGIC. I mean, it's a book about magic, sure, but the actual book itself is pure magic. I cried at the end! I never expected to cry! I knew I'd love this story but I didn't understand just how much. I don't even know what more to say. It just made my heart so happy. What a delight to read. Off to start the next!

I finally decided to listen to my friend and read Harry Potter! Stephen Fry does a really awesome job with all his voices. I can't wait to find out what happens next and how this holiday will go back home with the Dursley. I love Hagred. He has such a big heart ❤️

The first time I read this, I found it charming but not terribly unique. I enjoyed myself immensely, but I could also see that it had some pretty basic beats. I had to read it for class, and I wasn't sure if I wanted to read it - I had grown up in one of Those Families that wasn't allowed to read Harry Potter. Even now I'm conflicted about the magic thing, and have heard so many arguments for and against the series. I think I'm prepared to say that I don't think it's a problem, but I want to do more reading about magic and sorcery and all of that before making a serious decision.

Despite not reading them, the series was everywhere. I grew up on the Tumblr of 2009-ish on, and despite spending most of my time in the SuperWhoLock circles, Harry Potter content was unavoidable. It was such a cultural thing; I have vivid memories of my cousins and grandfather preordering Deathly Hallows, and then all of them reading it at the same time. I know so many spoilers. I know about big character moments, including deaths, romances, betrayals, etc. I understand references and inside jokes, and have read countless fan theories about characters and situations I don't really care about. I've appreciated fanart and cosplays for years. I took the sorting hat quiz on Pottermore, and found my Patronus. As a soundtrack fan, I listened to the soundtrack for "Sorcerer's Stone" many times. I even visited the platform at 9 3/4 at Kings Cross, but that was mostly because my friends kind of wanted to (and we were there, so why not. I drew the line at visiting the studio though, I dedicated that time to visiting Baker Street instead, as is right and just). For someone who likes to go into books blind, it's super weird to go into a book series knowing that this character is going to die, and those characters are going to be a thing, and this is why this character is being a little (grown-up?) twerp. That said, I'm sure I don't know everything, and there are things I know that don't make sense yet (I know something about a Horcrux, but I couldn't for the life of me explain what it means). I'm sure this was the experience of a lot of people, but it's fascinating to me to think about. I don't know of another contemporary book that has had the widespread cultural impact that this series has. That's pretty amazing if you think about it.

Then came COVID. Harry Potter was my younger brother's quarantine series. He became immediately obsessed - he read and purchased all the books, and watched all the movies in what felt like the span of a month. He got this crazy look on his face whenever he talked about them, like he knew I didn't want to talk about it in depth, but that it was going to explode out of him one way or another. All he'd say was I needed to read them, and then that we needed to watch the movies.

I'm finally doing it. Just in time for Lent of course, when I'm trying to rightly order my reading goals, so it's going to take me a while because I have some Lenten reads I'm determined to get to. I found the first book just as charming and enjoyable as the last time, and there were some parts that made me chuckle, which always gets a book bonus points. I watched the first film right after with my brother, and my experience was the same as with the book; it really just snuck up on me. One minute I was sitting there, watching a movie, it was fun, whatever, and then the next minute I was feeling all twitchy at the thought of having to wait for the next one.

Needless to say, book two here I come!
