The cover drew me to this book. It’s absolutely stunning. I was really surprised with what I got with this book as I was expecting a high fantasy with a split world. But this book is a contemporary fantasy that reads very much for a younger YA audience. It was still a solid read but I’m not that interested in the second book.

This cover is gorgeous and is what initially drew me in to pick this one up. This is a contemporary fantasy, that bridges on a portal fantasy (which I love). However, in this book the reader only stays in this world. You can definitely tell that this is a first in the series type of book and I'm hoping that the other worlds will be explored in the later books. I liked the characters okay (I'm hoping that in the later books that there will be more character development though), but I loved the setting. I loved it being in a small town and how it was a safe haven for all the realms but it was also a safe haven for Maddie. The plot and world-building are definitely unique. The pacing of this story was pretty slow and I felt that it could have been condensed down, but it was still an enjoyable read.

It was off to a slow start, but picked up quickly about a third of the way in. Maddie is not the most interesting narrator, but the people around her almost make up for it—the Heiress, Brekken, Marcus, and more. They’re about as well-developed as you can expect from a 300-page book. It’s easy enough to catch on to the various worlds and their different magic systems, and I loved the idea of the Inn being a neutral place were they all converge.

Some story elements were incredibly predictable, but other plot twists were actually kind of surprising, and I’m very interested to see what the second book in this series has to offer.

I was skeptical coming into this book given that the reviews were so varied, but the story and execution thus far is really interesting! We also have a bisexual main character, in a sort of love triangle, where neither party is absolute trash?!?!? I've found myself rooting for both, and Maddie is an incredibly human character, I like that so far she doesn't have any hidden powers or something. It's a refreshing take for the "chosen one" trope to have someone actually wanting the job from the beginning.

I really enjoyed this book! It was very setting based which was different from what I am used to. I connected to the struggles of the main character really quickly and loved following her while she tried to fix everything. This book is about an inn on earth that has doorways to different worlds, and these people come through to stay at the inn which is considered to be a safe place for every species. But when a closed off doorway cracks open all hell breaks loose and Maddie has to question everything she was ever told about the inhabitants of this world.

The strong point of this book is definitely the world building, beautifully crafted, in wich you want to dive since the beginning. The first 3 chapters are a bit boring; you just learn a lot about the worlds and the Inn’s work; and after them you just jump into the story and you can’t stop reading till the very end. It’s short, it may have been longer, but at the same time I appreciate that the author didn’t put futile things just to make it longer.

I enjoyed reading about the main character, Maddie, because I think she is a lot like me, curious, loving and brave. Unfortunately, I couldn’t for the life of me comprehend her continuous comparing other’s age to her brother’s (oh my, she is 20, my brother would have been 20), like, there’s a lot to analyze. I didn’t like Brekken nor the Silver Prince, but I loved the Heiress, Taya and Willow, their relationships with Maddie and their courage. 

There is mystery and I loved how the author played around, giving clues and hints, I was able to foresee the plot twist at the end, but it actually didn’t ruin my read.

Unfortunately, I was unable to read the past 45% of this book. 
While the concepts of Havenfall and the other worlds are gripping and I was interested in the history and development of these worlds, the main character and the writing made me lose interest in Havenfall quickly. 

The main character, Maddie, goes to Havenfall in order to become the new innkeeper between the different worlds in the novel. However, that's all her character has. Maddie, for me, lacked personality and seemed to only have one purpose. I feel that if she had dimension, I would have enjoyed her character more. 

My last thing was writing. Though the writing was fast-paced and didn't linger, the writing style for me fell on the younger side of YA and didn't fit my current reading tastes. 

I would say more however I did not feel like this book was for me and DNFed the book roughly halfway through. I may give the author's other books a try in the future, as I don't want to dismiss her writing on this book alone.

Sara Holland gained my following after reading her Everless duology. Her descriptive voice brought her world to life. I found the same to be true for Havenfall. When I found out about this new series, I had to jump on it immediately, eager to read what new concept and world Holland devised. I wasn’t disappointed. 

The world-building in Havenfall is solid. Four worlds converge in the magical inn known as Havenfall. The frozen land of Fiordenkill, the hot, elemental planes of Byrn, and the mysterious and sealed-off land of Solaria, home to shape-shifters, all converge at this special Inn. Of all these places, Haven (Earth) is the only place that doesn’t have magic, which is also why it has become the neutral, safe place for the worlds to converge. Humans cannot enter the foreign lands due to their lack of magical abilities. 

  The point is, people know that this is a place where you can vanish, even if they don’t know why. We’re hardly in Briar County, Colorado, anymore. We’re elsewhere.

Not all is negative for humans, as they are the only people that can manage the Inn. Maddie has grown up knowing the secret of Havenfall--as it is a secret from the rest of the human world. Her family is endowed with the responsibility to keep the inn running under the radar of the rest of humanity. Her uncle has been the innkeeper for years, and she would go there each summer to learn the ways, protocol, formalities, and whatnot of dealing with delegates from different nations.

This year, Maddie is more eager to get to Havenfall than ever. Her mother recently received the death sentence for apparently killing Maddie’s brother, Nate, years before. Distraught with knowing her mother incapable of committing such an atrocity, Maddie eagerly dives into the responsibilities set before her, as she will be taking over running the Inn for her Uncle Marcus soon. 

For Maddie, being at Havenfall gives her assurance. But when her uncle falls into a strange slumber after being attacked by a Solarian from the banned world, she finds that the innkeeper title suddenly falls on her. Not only that, the gate that was previously sealed off to Solaria is cracked, and a threat to the Summit and Havenfall itself. If Earth is open to Solaria, that means that shape-shifters, also known as soul-devourers, may now be among them and can attack at any moment. 

  There’s a very specific kind of splintering feeling that comes with seeing the people you trust fall short or fall apart. They are the ones who are supposed to take care of you.

Maddie’s story is one about growth and stepping into her responsibility and position even when she doesn’t feel ready for it. Maddie quickly learns that being the innkeeper is a difficult position, as she now is responsible for her guests from the other realms and their safety. With a possible Solarian threat, an emboldened, otherworldly prince, a missing friend, and her unwell uncle, Maddie often times finds herself without support. Her self-doubt is palpable, and she often times is thrust into making decisions for the good of Havenfall first.

What Maddie uncovers is that there is much more at play than the occasional Summit at Havenfall. Betrayal strikes home when Brekken, Maddie’s dearest friend and love interest is blamed for opening the gate to Solaria. Since, his disappearance only incriminates him further as a conspirator against the adjacent realms. Maddie must uncover why the trustworthy soldier would go against everything he has ever stood for since she had known him, and why now. 

The thing with Havenfall that I encountered that I didn’t nearly as much in the Everless Duology (maybe this is just because I’ve read many more books since then in this genre) was that it was pretty predictable. I felt like the antagonist could be spotted from a mile away, and the true intentions of a select few characters were obviously not what they appeared to be at face value. However, Havenfall doesn’t fully disappoint, as there is a rather-surprising plot twist revealed in the very end, which I think makes up for some of the previous predictability.

Maddie, and a few other characters identify as LGBT. She is exclusively interested in Brekkin, a boy she grew up with who hails from Fiordenkill, but shows curiosity in a peculiar acquaintance known as Taya. 

With the way that the story concludes, it makes me wonder if other worlds will be opened back up to access Havenfall in the future? I would be curious to discover what other worlds were previously engaged with the Haven of the realms because the different worlds are what make this read so ensnaring. Despite some downfalls with predictability and a slower-paced plot, the world-building and ending make Havenfall a good read.

           There were things that I liked about this book, like finding out about Tayla and Maddies brother.. the inn concept was cool. ( I love ilona andrews innkeeper series) I don't feel like we got enough about the other worlds.. i also didn't really connect with any of the characters and I thought the love interest Brekken would be in more of the book, it he dissapears in the beginning and doesn't come back into the story until the end. 
I think I'll check out the sequel when its released from the library. I do want to see if they find Tayla and Maddies brother.. and maybe if that changes the outcome of Maddies mom on death row.

           It was both better and worse than I expected. I really liked the way it was written and I liked the ending a lot, but a lot of it was pretty obvious.

Like all the way from the first meeting with Taya it was obvious she was different, then the first time she noticed something up with Taya I knew she was solarian and the whole thing with Taya "hinting" stuff was just overly obvious to me, and I also felt the ending was a bit rushed in the way the Silver Prince just left, but I loved the explanation in the end and the whole thing about the solarians!!

Also (unpopular opinion) I'm really happy Maddie and Taya didn't end up together or kiss or anything because it was just like every single time they spoke it got sexual for no reason and it was painfully obvious that they were on the way of maybe becoming a couple, as well as the fact that Maddie called Taya a friend even when she barely knew a thing about Taya except that she was into girls and flirting with Maddie.

Still though, loved the book and I loved the concept. Also really liked how different this felt from Everless (which I found amazing!!), can't wait to read the sequel to this.

I really did love the concept of this book. I thought the mysterious inn that connected three different world was unique and I really did like the main character as well. I also like the way this story was structured. I struggled to feel super connected to the character and also felt like the pacing of this book was not as strong. I thought the book was very short and not enough "action" happened tp keep me engaged. I found the end top be unique and will def being reading book too. The highlight of this read for me was def the inn and the world building.

I should have loved this book but sadly enough I didn't. This world is so incredibly interesting but I just wish we got to learn more about it. I really liked our main character and the side characters. The romance, in my opinion, is a bit underdeveloped though but I'm hoping the romance will change in the next book because there is kind of a love triangle and the other side just got more developement in this book. Talking about that next book. I'm super excited for it. I just think we're going to explore the world more and I can't wait to do that. Now my main problem with this book is that I just didn't care about what was happening in the book. The plot was interesting and even though some parts were predictable it did have some good plot twists. I just felt a bit distanced from what was happening and therefore I didn't really care. This book could have been so atmospherical and it's a world where you so easily could fall into but something was keeping me away from so. I don't know. That's kind of the only issue I had with this book but it did keep me from fully enjoying it.

I almost DNF-ed this book at 25%, but I didn't because I wanted to give it a solid chance. Some books take a while to find their flow, and then they take off into greatness. By the time I reached 50%, I had committed myself to finishing Havenfall because when I dislike something, I like to fully be able to articulate why I dislike it. And I dislike this book greatly.

This book gets 2-stars because it had 2 positive attributes. 

Those 2 positive attributes were:
1. A super-fun idea with great potential. An inn tucked into the mountains of Colorado that is the center of the magical multiverse. It's a super dope concept and launching point that could've gone anywhere. Unfortunately, the author took us nowhere.
2. The casually queer nature of our MC. This was handled so beautifully; Maddie just straight up says she is attracted to boys and girls, and we just move on. We also have a male and female love interest presented, but the author never makes it gross (even though Taya is almost 20 and Maddie is only 16, but that's a whole different can of worms). As a bisexual woman who grew up without any rep in books, it warms my heart to see this handled so beautifully.

Now, the rest of the book is as hollow as the bones of a bird.
1. The world-building is non-existent. So non-existent that the author actually provides us a forward in which we are info-dumped about the other worlds and peoples who inhabit them. THIS IS A PORTAL FANTASY. You shouldn't have to give me a list of the portal-worlds before we even start the book, you should build that shit into the narrative. This is bad writing and is unforgivably bad when it comes to fantasy.
2. All of the characters are one-dimensional rubes. They are all dumb and boring. There isn't a single redeeming trait amongst the lot, nor is there growth. NONE.
3. This book is all telling with zero showing. We are told about Maddie and Brekken's amazing friendship and blossoming love--we are given one scene where they make-out before Brekken disappears FOR THE ENTIRE BOOK. We are told about Maddie's family, but none of them except for her uncle's husband get any true page space. We are told about the other realms and magic, but again no realms on the page and barely any magic on the page. The only thing that we are shown with any degree of time/page space is Taya and Maddie's friendship, and even that is laughably executed.
4.Not a single exciting or surprising thing happened. Not one. And honestly, I have no problem with that usually. You don't need twists and surprising and non-stop action to write a great fantasy. But if you don't have those things, you need to execute what you do have exceptionally well. That did not happen here.
5. The logic of these characters and this world is so hole-filled that the Pennsylvania Interstate system is jealous. No one ever asks anyone the important questions. EVER. They all just stew in their confusion, frustration, and rage and think about how everyone else is a liar, and then they go off to the next nonsensical scene that really doesn't add anything to the plot other than proving how absolutely rudimentary our heroine is.
6. Maddie is the least impressive "non-special white girl" heroine I've read in a long time. Which is saying something considering the absolutely overwhelming selection we have in YA. She has zero skills, zero intellect, zero anything. She does nothing unless she is reacting to what has already happened. She is truly not special to the point of being unnecessary to the entirety of the narrative. She runs around Havenfall, whimpering and whining about how she has no idea what's she's doing while shit just happens to her, and she reacts (usually by holding back tears and running away).
7. Our supporting cast of characters SUCKS. A not so great MC can be forgiven if the supporting cast is great. None of these characters were great or memorable or anything other than present.
8. The age of Maddie's potential love interests are maybe problematic? We are never told Brekken's age. He and Maddie grow up together, but when we meet him, he is officially a soldier in his world's Queendom. I assume he is no older than 18, but we don't know. Taya explicitly states she is 19 going on 20. Maddie is 16, and we do not know when she will turn 17 (hell, did she just turn 16? Who knows, we certainly don't). I'm not going to get into all of the potential pitfalls of that huge of an age gap at that young of an age. I'm just going to say: an almost 20-year-old possibly dating a 16 (maybe almost 17 yo?) is super sus, and the author needs to tread lightly if she plans on moving forward with this one.
9. The Nate twist was not a twist, and I will actually vomit on the next author that writes something this chaotic and uninspired.


I could keep going--dive into the "betrayals" and the painfully trite plot. I could talk about the inconsistencies and just how plain BAD everything was, but I've already wasted too much time on this book.

Okay so I personally really enjoyed Holland from when I first read Everless. Of course I never ended up finishing the duology even though there was just TWO books to read but I liked what she wrote, so I knew that I wasn’t really going to have a problem reading this one. Plus the premise for this novel just seemed super interesting and I was excited to see what she would be having next for us.

So I went into this one and I was just blown away really. I think that this one was even better than what we had for Everless and I really liked Everless, ya feel? Okay, so.

I feel like lately I’ve been really into books where they can successfully blend the fantasy world with the real world, and this was one of those that I really ended up liking. I mean, who would have thought that I would have liked a girl that was from Colorado, when I have never been there myself, nor have I ever really wanted to go? Not saying that Colorado is a bad place or anything like that but it was never one of those places where I was like “omg I have to go” even though I do have some family there and I should totally go there to visit them one of these days.

Anyway.

I also freaking love it where we have a supposedly normal girl from a normal world being thrust into this fantasy world – whatever kind of fantasy world it is, no discrimination really because there are so many kinds out there and there’s something for everyone so just bare with me here – and then finding out that she has the power to actually take matters into her own hands and be a freaking boss ass bitch. Excuse my language, but that is the best way for me to phrase that because that was totally the vibe that I was getting from Maddie when she was going through her journey. It helps that Maddie’s family has been at this for generations, and sure maybe that gives her an advantage, but there is always room for improvement and for Maddie to discover something about her that none of the other family members ever knew until now.

Plus, I get it. I would not want to be anywhere near the real world if I were in Maddie’s shoes. The fact that her mother is in jail accused of killing Maddie’s own brother? Ugh, that part just hurt me because I could not even imagine what she was going through, how she could even survive that. You know? It’s just insane to me.

This book was great and I think that I need to get ready to read the sequel, and definitely go back to Holland’s first duology so I can actually finish a series from her, and that’s just my own fault really.

I was actually kind of conflicted with this one, which is a total shock because portal fantasy is almost always an instant love for me. Which is actually what saved this book from being a two start to be honest, the world was awesome and I had a lot of fun learning the politics and complications of the Realms.

I found the plot to be kind of lacking, and the timing was so weird too. There was one point around the halfway mark where Maddie said she had only been there for 2 days or something and I was genuinely shocked, I thought this book took place over several weeks at least. It was weird because it felt like too much happened in too short a time, but at the same time it felt like very little happened at all. I think it was just one problem being drawn out which a bunch of smaller, unrelated problems sprinkled in at random, but it ended up feeling pretty disjointed. 

When it comes to characters, while I didn't dislike the main character, I did find her to be kind of forgettable. I finished this book only a week ago and I'm struggling to remember what her personality was. I also found her constant inner monologue about her brother got old really fast. I understand grief and recognize that her way of thinking is probably pretty accurate to what it's like to go through that trauma, but holy shit she couldn't go through a single page without bringing up her brother or cupboards or blue fur and just oh my goddd shhhhhh! It was way too much, to the point that I couldn't even feel bad for her anymore. I did like the other characters though, especially Taya and Graylin.

Overall I did quite enjoy this, even though it definitely wasn't a favourite. But I am looking forward to whenever this series will continue!

Havenfall is about an in that is the heart of all the realms, one of which being Earth where our main character Maddie is from. She arrives for the summer to visit the inn, run by her uncle, which hosts an annual convention of inter-realm relations and trade. Hoping for a romantic summer with her childhood friend Brekkan, she instead walks into the political turmoil of the century!

I really enjoyed the fantasy world that Holland creates for us, and the way that the Havenfall inn must maintain impartiality towards each of the three realms. The role of Innkeeper is something Maddie hopes to step into one day, when her uncle wants to retire, but turmoil, violence, and betrayal leads to her unexpected ‘promotion’ before she’s been trained and prepared for it. Will she maintain order? Or are the worlds about to destroy all alliances?

I love love LOVE Maddie as a character. She’s got a Tragic Past™ that for once is actually used to create depth in not only herself but also in the narrative going forward. Her interactions with love interests are very cute, and this is the first time I’ve read about a character who was bisexual and comfortable with that knowledge. A lot of times, I feel like sexuality is portrayed as a struggle and an identity crisis, and while that can certainly be the case it felt so positive to see a model who’s already confident in who she is, even if she’s not confident in her new political Innkeeper role.

How the different realms interacted and the power dynamics of the different delegations (and all their magical powers) were so cool to read and felt really well thought-out as magical systems go. I can’t say too much without getting into spoiler territory but I’m so excited for the sequel already! I need more Taya in my life.

It took me a really really long time to get into/through this book....like a whole month.... Much like many others I considered DNFing it but I was lucky enough to get the second book from Bloomsbury so I wanted to persist so I could enjoy the second book. It was slightly predictable but still kept me interested enough in the last half that I am interested to see where book 2 takes me. I think I will take a break though before I jump in so I don't end up in a reading slump.

This is the kind of mystery and magic story set at an inn that I wanted to read when I picked up Greenglass House a couple months ago. The idea is amazing and the setting is atmospheric. I also really appreciated that the prose really let you into Maddie’s head. The pacing was quite slow - I had hoped it was just a quiet read that still had questions and mystery. But being the first in a duology, Havenfall felt incomplete somehow - like it didn’t reach it’s full potential. My rating keeps going between 3 and 4 stars so I’ll round up just because I did enjoy reading it even if it wasn’t as good as I thought it would be.

L'univers est très intriguant, au carrefour entre Narnia et Grisha. J'étais totalement absorbée par la construction du système magique et des différents peuples. Nous suivons Maggie qui vient passer l'été dans l'hôtel de son oncle perché sur une montagne mystérieuse. La particularité de cet hôtel c'est qu'il hébergé les portails vers d'autres mondes où des êtres magiques vivent et se réunissent pour un sommet de la paix chaque équinoxe d'été à Havenfall. Malheureusement des évènements viennent contrecarrer les plans de Maggie qui se retrouve à la tête de l'hôtel obligée de gérer les multiples problèmes qui se succèdent et d'affronter des vérités qu'elle refusait de voir.

L'univers et le système de magie l'a beaucoup plu. J'ai aussi fortement apprécié le lieu décrit par l'auteur. Un hôtel sur une montagne en pleine nature c'est exactement le genre de paysage qui m'attire.

Les réflexions de Maggie sans grand intérêt. La première moitié du livre on retrouve toutes les 2 pages la même réflexion, Maggie est inquiète, elle se pose les mêmes questions encore et encore. Heureusement arrivé à la seconde moitié cette tendance s'atténue pour devenir plus digeste.
La relation des personnages n'est pas suffisamment exploitée. Il n'y a pas de romance à proprement parler mais on nous rapporte un évènement comme un "crush" alors qu'en lisant le passage je n'ai ressenti aucune émotion. Je pense que ça manquait d'intensité.
L'intrigue n'est pas non plus exceptionnelle. C'est intéressant mais tellement prévisible que tout lecteur aguerri aura deviné les différents dénouements dès le départ.


PS : cette cover est monstrueusement magnifique ! Je suis tellement déçue que le tome 2 ne soit pas à la hauteur graphiquement parlant.

Before I begin this review, I would just like to thank Bloomsbury for hosting the ARC giveaway and shipping me this book! I was really excited to read this book and was excited I got it just a little bit earlier!

I really enjoyed Havenfall. It was well thought out and the way Holland would describe scenes was just so beautiful and I could just picture everything in my head so crystal clear. I really enjoyed just sitting down with a cup of coffee and a fuzzy blanket and enjoying the journey Holland takes us on in this story. The concept of the book was different and unique and that was one of the main reasons I wanted to read this book ,because I felt like it was different from anything I have read before. 

I really enjoyed reading this book, but some of the character development was not really as strong as I had hoped it would be. I didn't truly find myself attached to the characters in this story. Especially the antagonist in the story, I didn't find myself truly hating him throughout the story, and I would have liked to have seen that.

Overall, I think this was a really good start for what Holland writes next and I know for sure I will be waiting until the next book comes out. This book was really interesting and fun to read and I do recommend it to anyone who wants a fun and relaxing read! Be sure to check this book out because it comes out March 3rd! Again, I would like to thank Bloomsbury for sending me this book! I hope everyone enjoys Havenfall as much as I did!

I literally loved everything about this book. The story was so good, it wasn't too slow or too fast, the characters were good and the plot twist was also really good. The writing style was perfect and I enjoyed it really much! I really recommend it, so go read it :)

Sadly, I wish I could have enjoyed this more. I absolutely love Sara's writing, it's so easy to breeze through. However, I couldn't focus on this story. I kept getting distracted easily, and I can't quite put the finger on the why. The plot was okay, the MC was okay, world-building could have been better in my opinion. Nonetheless, I couldn't be fully entertained by this, and I'm quite sad about it.
