Ester non ha mai voluto rivelare il nome del suo "complice" che infine - lacerato tra ansia di schiettezza e orgoglio, e perseguitato dal marito della giovane - cederà, confessando la sua colpa. La lettera scarlatta, libro che rese celebre il nome di Nathaniel Hawthorne, è un mirabile esempio di fusione perfettamente riuscita tra sviluppo tematico-narrativo, delineazione dei personaggi e procedimenti linguistico-stilistici. Hawthorne fa di Ester un personaggio esemplare: mostrando, da un lato, una compartecipazione profonda, ma soffermandosi, dall'altro, in un pensoso e drammatico indugio di fronte alla sua "colpa", pur condannando l'implacabilità puritana e la violenza moralistico-sociale di cui è vittima.«Orbene questo straccio scarlatto ché tale ormai era ridotto dal tempo e dall'uso, esaminato con cura, presentava l'aspetto di una lettera.»

It seemed to argue so wide a diffusion of her shame, that all nature knew of it; it could have caused her no deeper pang, had the leaves of the trees whispered the dark story among themselves,-had the summer breeze murmured about it,-had the wintry blast shrieked it aloud!
