Black Blood

Ethan, a battle-weary cyborg soldier, retreats to a tranquil planet in search of peace. There, he meets Mikhail, a gentle botanist whose warm smile and delicate touch seem almost fragile. Ethan finds himself inexplicably drawn to Mikhail, experiencing a restless unease whenever they’re together. He longs to touch, to cherish—feelings that are undeniably human. BLACK BLOOD

As much as I enjoyed this, so much more than Yoichi to Tsugumo, I was prepared for this to have more story with some romance. I'm not that big into sci-fi, space, future stuff, but I thought this would have more of that. More world-building, more of other characters (number 1 Hawk fan, he is everything to me), more of Mihail and Ethan working together, but it was kind of just all romance. I probably should've lowered my expectations when I realized these chapters were 18 pages long and this is just 1 volume. I do kind of wish this were multi-volume and did more with its more high stakes moments, because what we got with the structure of this manga left me wanting more story.

I still had fun with it. The style and vibe felt like those early 2000s space/mech/furture animes that came on adult swim and syfy channel. Stuff like Big O, Cowboy Bebop, Gurren Lagann, and even a bit of FLCL that I could picture parts of this manga animated. I don't even like those shows; I just grew up watching them because I had brothers who did. It just helped with this manga feeling nostalgic, I guess.
