Royal We

LOVING PRINCE HARRY AND MEGHAN MARKLE’S ENGAGEMENT? Fall in love with the perfect book to feed your royal addiction... where an unassuming American meets the future king of England... Rebecca Porter was never one for fairy tales. Her twin sister is the romantic who fantasizes about glamour, fame and fortune – Bex has always been a tomboy. So when she spends a year at Oxford, and finds herself living down the hall from Prince Nicholas, she is the only girl not interested in dating the future king. But eventually Bex can't resist falling for Nick, and as their friendship turns to romance, Bex becomes immersed in ritzy society, dazzling ski trips, and dinners at Kensington Palace – a world away from her humble upbringing. The relationship also comes with unimaginable baggage: hysterical tabloids, Nick's sparkling ex-girlfriends, and a family whose private life is much thornier and more tragic than anyone on the outside knows. The pressures are almost too much to bear, as Bex struggles to reconcile the man she loves with the monarch he's fated to become. WHAT THEY’RE SAYING ABOUT THE ROYAL WE... "In their first adult novel, authors Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan take on a story of romance and rivalries inspired by today's most talked-about royal couple: Will and Kate. "If I'm Cinderella today, I dread who they'll think I am tomorrow. I guess it depends on what I do next." American Rebecca Porter was never one for fairy-tales. Her twin sister Lacey was always the romantic, the one who daydreamed of being a princess. But it's adventure-seeking Bex who goes to Oxford and meets dreamy Nick across the hall - and thus Bex who accidentally finds herself in love with the eventual heir to the British throne. Nick is everything she could have imagined, but Prince Nicholas has unimaginable baggage: grasping friends, a thorny family, hysterical tabloids tracking his every move, and a public that expected its future king to marry a native. On the eve of the most talked-about wedding of the century, Bex reflects on what she's sacrificed for love -- and exactly whose heart she may yet have to break.""--

I don’t exactly know why but I had such a hard time reading this one. My mind kept wandering. I had to force myself back in the story and re-read the same lines over and over again. I think most of it is because I don’t know much about the Royal Family and I didn’t get most of the references. Or maybe because I knew how it was going to end. (The first chapter starts at present day and then goes back in time until it reaches present day.) Although this is not always a bad thing when it is done well. The pace of the story is so slow that I kept losing interest. Overall it’s not a bad story, but something clearly didn’t work for me because it took me a lot longer that I was expecting to read it. I had to sprint through the last half because I just wanted to finish it. 😪

This was a fun read. I wanted something lighthearted and mushy and that's exactly what I got.

An American girl finds her prince in this "fun and dishy" (People) royal romance inspired by Prince William and Kate Middleton. American Bex Porter was never one for fairy tales. Her twin sister Lacey was always the romantic, the one who daydreamed of being a princess. But it's adventure-seeking Bex who goes to Oxford and meets dreamy Nick across the hall - and Bex who finds herself accidentally in love with the heir to the British throne. Nick is wonderful, but he comes with unimaginable baggage: a complicated family, hysterical tabloids tracking his every move, and a public that expected its future king to marry a Brit. On the eve of the most talked-about wedding of the century, Bex looks back on how much she's had to give up for true love... and exactly whose heart she may yet have to break. Praise for THE ROYAL WE "Hysterical" - Entertainment Weekly "Full of love and humor, and delicious in too many ways." - Emma Straub, New York Times bestselling author "Engrossing and deeply satisfying." - Jen Doll, author of Save the Date

I really am struggling with this review. Overall the story is ok. But despite what people say, it’s not really funny. Don’t expect a rom com. It is absolutely William/Kate fan fic like people say. I love a good fall for the crown Prince story but this was not Hallmark or Hollywood’s “The Prince and Me”. It is nearly 500 pages and so many of those pages were superfluous. Oh it’s another drunken party/event. And another one. Oh there’s another one. And a lot of the hiccups on the path to getting married were forced. Maybe it could have used one or two less or maybe instead of making the original book 5 parts, it could have been released in to 5 novellas.

I would give this 4 stars at most. I think it’s better than 3 but I can’t partial Star here.

This book is SO fun! PSA: you might get marginally sleep deprived from staying up way too late for too many nights because you can't put it down. Or maybe that's just me.

I admit to watching a few of the Hallmark/Netflix type movies where a girl meets a guy and surprise he's a prince. So I thought this would be cute and fluffy, but I was surprised that the characters were more developed and more believable than some other Cinderella stories. Still pretty cute and fluffy, too.

taryn

So cheesy, but could not put it down. Absolutely loved it

Summer Stanley

Super cheesy. Super girly. Shamelessly enjoyable.

The triangle trope was used in this and it was obvious but overall this was still a good pallet cleanser. Also not too bad for fan-fic of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

It did take me a minute to figure out the pacing and like Bex lol but I was soon very wrapped up in the fairy tale (or not) romance of it all! This brought back memories of watching The Prince and Me and pouring over Hello magazine for news about Kate and Will. I loved all of the side characters in here! Wow rich people have the oddest names and the craziest life stories but it was like watching a reality TV show that you just couldn’t turn off! .

This is more of a 2.5 for me but scoring it a 2 would be too harsh.
I only made it 75% of the way through. I wish I could bring myself to read the remaining 15% but I feel like that would be unjust torture. Especially since I’ve been on a really good reading high from my last few books.

I couldn’t tell if I just hated the characters or actually disliked the storyline and the characters. I can see what the authors were going for but it wasn’t working for me. Thus can be the problem with fan fiction based on real people. Toy just can’t mix Edward and Kate with Harry and Megan story lines. It just doesn’t work.

Yeah... no.

Looking back at my other 1* books, I feel like I have to revise that, because this is most certainly the worst book I have ever read.

I have been reading the GFY blog for years and I am well aware of Cocks and Morgan's obsession with British royalty and blue and white striped shirts. The blog is funny, they can certainly write. But it's one thing to maintain a blog about fashion and a whole different endeavour to write a novel (and alas, it's not their only one...). I was also vaguely aware that this book is remotely based on William and Catherine, but I did not expect for it to be an actual fan-fiction.

I cannot even count the ways in which this novel is so bad. It's everything, from start to finish. For starters, it's too long - a story that could have been wrapped up in less than 200 pages, were it not for the uselessly long ramblings that talk about nothing. I found myself skipping entire paragraphs just to get to the point.

Then there are the characters, not one of them even remotely likeable. All the protagonists are annoying, there is nothing redeeming about them. All they do is get drunk, tick every British stereotype in the book and get shagged with anyone and everyone. Oh, and make one bad decision after another. Bex is probably one of my most hated characters in literature, she is whiny, uncouth, lacks basic manners (not talking about court etiquette here) and seems to change personalities as the wind blows.

The main love story seems forced, people are thrown together without rhyme or reason, things look a lot like a Mexican telenovela in terms of probability and believability. There are so many idiotic tropes, that I had predicted a lot of the things before they had already happened, (view spoiler)[such as Bex cheating her fiancé with his brother. (hide spoiler)] I know it's not my place, but I actually feel disgusted on behalf of the British royal family by how things are portrayed here. The writers should have invented their own kingdom a la Genovia, not take a dump all over the British monarchy.

Let me tell you, I sometimes enjoy the guilty pleasure of reading a trashy romance, it lightens things up. But this book is a train wreck. Its place is in a burning fire.
