I read this book as a child and it left an impression on me. I decided to reread it immediately following my dreadful experience with Ready Player One because it's also set primarily in a virtual reality role playing game.

Yeah, Heir Apparent still holds up. Even keeping in mind it's intended for upper elementary/middle schoolers, it's not the most inventive thing ever written, but it's a fun and funny romp through classic sword-and-sorcerery scenarios, with realistic RPG frustrations. The framing device was skeletal at best and I'm not sure of the extent of the protagonist's character development at the book's conclusion, but the couple hours I spent reading passed quickly and contentedly.

My true rating for this is 4.5 stars, but I'm rating it 5 for Goodread's purposes because it brings the average closer to my true rating for the book.

The last time I read this, I was probably a younger high schooler. It's been A WHILE. For that reason, I was a little apprehensive going into this. I've read more than a few books before where I realized how much nostalgia had colored my view of the book. Fortunately, this seems to be one of those books where my younger brain was very definitely right. This book was a great read. As I said, it had been a while so I remembered the general gist of things, but I really didn't remember much of the specifics of the story. It was really fun experiencing it all again.

I do have to say that there were some smaller things I found to be a little juvenile, but nothing that was outright awful. The concept of being stuck in a video game remains utterly fascinating to me. This book absolutely had a formative view of how I view plot-based games. I'm sure one day something like this will cease to be science fiction and we will have games that are virtual reality inserts, but I'm not sure I'll ever see that in this lifetime.

I would definitely recommend this book to a friend. It's a great read and I think it's appropriate to all ages.

I thought it was pretty good, though when I read it about a year ago I was confused because something's weren't explained enough. I did not realize it was a sequel until now. The funny thing is that this morning I just read the first book.
