Mia's life is falling apart. Her brother was found dead following a conviction for rape, and now she no longer works, exercises or cleans up after herself. Before long she is summoned before the court, charged with failure to provide her medical data as required by the state. Mia is young, beautiful and a successful scientist, and it is not only her actions but also her intellect that mark her as subversive. When she begins to challenge her brother's conviction, and by implication The Method that keeps society running smoothly, she comes up against the full force of a regime determined to control every aspect of its citizens' lives.

The Method

brilliant, succinct narrative dissection of the predicament of psychotic subjects vis-à-vis the ceaselessly self-propagating logics of contemporary capitalist biopsychopolitics, a cerebral novel philosophically in the same vein as hatred of sex by oliver davis and tim dean

Mia Holl lives in a state governed by The Method, where good health is the highest duty of the citizen. Everyone must submit medical data and sleep records to the authorities on a monthly basis, and regular exercise is mandatory. Mia is young and beautiful, a successful scientist who is outwardly obedient but with an intellect that marks her as subversive. Convinced that her brother has been wrongfully convicted of a terrible crime, Mia comes up against the full force of a regime determined to control every aspect of its citizens' lives.

When I saw we had to read this book for our Health Promotion course at University, I was happily surprised. This sounds like something I'd love! But alas, I didn't love it.

Surely there were some parts that stood out to me and that I liked, and I feel like this could have truly been an enjoyable read, were it not for the novel being too fast-paced. I would have liked more detail and more suspense, more emotions, if you wish. I must say that it did feel eerie at times, being as we're all living in a pandemic that isn't looking to end soon, but it was more the reminder of that fact than the story itself that made me feel squeamish at times.

I did like Mia's character, though. Just wish I knew more about her.
