I loved this just as much as I knew I would. A truly marvelous concept that was executed BEAUTIFULLY. Ugh. It's so simplistic: it's literally just the story of this place, this house/area of land throughout history. It's a stunning testament to how far we've come and how incredible the human experience is. While his art style wasn't my personal favorite, his 2 page landscape spreads? Stunning! I'm so excited to pick up more from this author/artist!

Referência absoluta da arte de novela gráfica. Um livro que quebra não só com todas as convenções do meio, como com todas as convenções narrativas, e por isso naturalmente não consegue o impacto das grandes histórias já contadas por este meio, mas consegue a atenção total daqueles que se interessam por compreender o potencial expressivo do mesmo, particularmente críticos e criadores.

Não consigo deixar de evocar Mark Rothko sempre que me foco na icónica capa de "Here". 

O modelo de contar histórias apresentado por McGuire neste livro começou há 25 anos, quando em 1989 publicou na revista RAW, dirigida por Art Spiegelman e Françoise Mouly, um pequeno experimento de 6 páginas a preto-e-branco no qual se via, ao longo de 36 quadros, sempre um mesmo quarto atravessado pelo tempo, em milhares de anos.

Esta mesma técnica é aqui explorada ao longo de 300 páginas. “Here” encerra o leitor nas três dimensões espaciais, permitindo apenas a 4ª dimensão, do tempo, variar, e assim conduzir o leitor ao longo de uma história que encerra milhões e milhões de anos, tanto em direção ao passado, como ao futuro. O efeito é vertiginoso, se ganhamos uma forte noção da passagem do tempo, do seu impacto no ser humano, nas suas memórias e recordações, ganhamos ainda mais noção da sua relatividade, da nossa efemeridade.

Estando o espaço situado numa pradaria americana, e sendo esta atravessada por centenas de datas, que vão sendo apresentadas quase exclusivamente por imagens, podemos dizer que existe uma componente minimalista que puxa pela interpretação do leitor, instigando-o a dar corpo histórico ao que lhe vai passando pelos olhos, alimentando assim o imaginário narrativo em múltiplas camadas de sentido, nomeadamente permeando tudo com o sabor de diferente épocas facilmente reconhecíveis, tais como: colonialismo anos 1600-1700, romantismo anos 1800, ‘american way of life’ 1940-1950, presente anos 2010, passado pré-histórico 500,000 AC, futuro 2200. McGuire explica que a ideia lhe adveio a partir da morte da sua irmã e pais:

"You see things differently after going through that experience—the idea of impermanence is made more real, and everything seems fragile. The family home had to be sold. Just emptying it took a while. My parents lived there for fifty years, and the house was packed. My mom hated throwing anything away. All the clothes, the photos, the letters and things that had meaning to them. The only thing I took were boxes of photos and some films my dad shot. I think it helped with the grieving process, looking at all that stuff." Entrevista para a Paris Review, 2015

A particularidade ou brilhantismo desta técnica resume-se no facto de ser exclusiva do meio da banda desenhada, já que ao se socorrer da técnica de quadros dentro de quadros para contar a história, ou seja, uma sequencialidade gráfica temporal visual, une e funde o meio, a forma e a história. Em parte, ainda que com objetivos totalmente distintos, fez-me recordar “Zoom” (1995) de Istvan Banyai. Mas nada melhor do que deixar o próprio criador explicar o que torna esta abordagem única:

"The way simultaneousness is presented feels unique to the medium. If you were writing this story out as text, it would be a long string of events and descriptions connected by the word meanwhile. With film, you can use a split screen to show two different events, but if you add more than two it becomes increasingly difficult to keep track of what’s happening without missing something. With comics, that frozen image is easier to take in. The reader can move around within it. 
And that simultaneousness actually feels close to how we think. If you stop and try to examine your thoughts, it’s always a jumble of memories and projections. We are all zooming around in time in our heads. We’re rarely in the present—we’re more often anticipating events, or thinking back to a memory of yesterday or last week or our childhoods, and then suddenly jumping ahead again. 
In the book, the room is presented as a full double-page spread. The corner of the room is in the gutter of the book, so the opened book echoes the architecture of the space and puts the reader into the room. Each spread is marked with a date in the upper left corner. You time travel as you flip pages. Smaller panels with dates show other moments happening in the space at different times. The book may push the traditional formal aspects of the comics medium, but I think people are very used to reading multiple windows on their computers—it’s all clearly presented and understandable. "

Existe uma versão digital interativa, fruto de uma palestra dada por McGuire, na qual estava presente Stephen Betts que se apaixonou pela ideia, e dedicou dois anos ao seu desenvolvimento. Não a pude ainda experimentar, mas a julgar pelas palavras de McGuire, é uma experiência interessante, contudo distinta, já que a abordagem aqui apresentada foi especificamente pensada em virtude de quadros estáticos, sem movimento, som ou interatividade.

I don't even know how to describe this graphic novel. It tells a story one plot of land from the time the earth was born to the very distant future, but it tells it in a unique, non-linear way. The art was fantastic and I loved the mode of the storytelling. There are funny moments, profound moments, and heartbreaking moments captured in these pages, and all with very little dialogue. I highly recommend if you're looking for a unique graphic novel that approaches social topics in a unique way.
