Classic WWII historical fiction. It takes about 300 pages to really get into it, but once you do, it's supremely satisfying. You'll definitely want to read War and Remembrance, too.

I've been looking for a definitive telling of the events leading up to and around World War II for a while now and this Herman Wouk duology has exceeded all expectations thus far. The Winds of War tells the tale of the Henry Family during the years leading up to the War. Very detailed with much analysis of the motives of the world players involved. Just my kind of historical fiction. If you're looking for a brisk easy read with easily liked characters, this is not the book for you. The main protagonist is stodgy, determined, lacks imagination but loyal and quick to action. He grows on you and never let's go. Through 800+ pages he is the anchor and one comes to depend on him while things seem to go haywire. His steadiness, at first boring becomes the steady pint in a wildly careering compass. Pug (short for pugnacious, that should tell you) Henry is the best of characters and he and his family prevents this from becoming a dry history tome. Looking forward (with trepidation as the Holocaust is explored I believe) to the sequel - War and Remembrance.

Highly, highly recommended (particularly if you're an amateur history nut with an interest in WWII)
