Die drei Geschichten aus dem Leben des Landstreichers Knulp, einem Nachfahren von Eichendorffs Taugenichts, zählen zu den reizvollsten Stücken der frühen Prosa Hermann Hesses. In der Folge seiner Werke gehören sie zum großen Zyklus seiner Gerbersau-Erzählungen, der uns das Leben in einer schwäbischen Kleinstadt um die Jahrhundertwende am Beispiel zahlreicher charakteristischer und größtenteils authentischer Einzelschicksale überliefert.

It is a quick and easy read. It shows three major points in Knulp's life, and how his attitude changes over time. I love his philosophical musings. He was seen as unworthy, but he always gave people comfort which makes him a likable character. It's a good self-reflecting book and it was easy to follow along.

Ah Herman Hesse ah, nasıl bu kadar kısa şekilde bu kadar çok şey anlatıyorsun. Oldum olası göçebe bir hayat tarzına sahip olmak istemişimdir, o yüzden göçebe olan ve gezdiği yerlerde aslında kendini arayan karakterlere bayılıyorum; bu kitaba da bayıldım. Acaba olmam gereken yerde miyim, kaynaklarımı doğru kullanıyor muyum diye sık sık düşünen biriyim, bu kitapta da bunları okumak ve bir şekilde bi cevap duymak çok hoşuma gitti.

Evet olmam gereken yerdeyim çünkü  bir sanatın ustası olsam da oradan kaçıp ormanda tilkilerle uyanmayı  isteyeceğim, insanoğlu hep olmadığı şeyin hayalini kuruyor. O yüzden olunması gereken bir yer yok diye düşünmek istiyorum artık, her şey nasıl olması gerekiyorsa öyle oluyor <3

Published in Germany in 1915, Knulp is a novel written by Hermann Hesse. It was Hesse's most popular book in the years before he published Demian. The novel is split up into three separate tales which are centered on the life of the main character: Knulp. Knulp, who was once a gifted and promising youth, is depicted as amiable vagabond that perpetually wanders from town to town staying with friends.

Consistently refusing to tie himself down to any trade, place, or person, he even deserts the companion who might be considered Hermann Hesse himself the summer they go tramping together. Knulp's exile is blissful, gentle, self-absorbed. But hidden beneath the light surface of these "Tales from the Life of Knulp" is the conscience of an artist who suspects that his liberation is worthless, even immoral. As he lies dying in a snowstorm, Knulp has an interview with God in which he reproaches himself for his wasted life. But it is revealed to Knulp that the whole purpose of his life has been to bring "a little homseickness for freedom" into the lives of ordinary men.
