The Lost Hero: The Graphic Novel (The Heroes of Olympus, Book 1)

Jason has a problem. He doesn't remember anything before waking up on a school bus holding hands with a girl. Apparently she's his girlfriend Piper, his best friend is a kid named Leo, and they're all students in the Wilderness School, a boarding school for "bad kids." What he did to end up here, Jason has no idea--except that everything seems very wrong. Piper has a secret. Her father has been missing for three days, and her vivid nightmares reveal that he's in terrible danger. Now her boyfriend doesn't recognize her, and when a freak storm and strange creatures attack during a school field trip, she, Jason, and Leo are whisked away to someplace called Camp Half-Blood. What is going on? Leo has a way with tools. His new cabin at Camp Half-Blood is filled with them. Seriously, the place beats Wilderness School hands down, with its weapons training, monsters, and fine-looking girls. What's troubling is the curse everyone keeps talking about, and that a camper's gone missing. Weirdest of all, his bunkmates insist they are all--including Leo--related to a god.

After loving the Percy Jackson Series last year, my friend recommended that I give The Heros of Olympus series a go and WOW, this was the perfect Reading experience after a busy few days commuting into London this provided the perfect reading experience on the train, and I help that I can get really emersed into the story via Audio Book.

We are introduced to Jason Grace, Piper McLean and Leo Valdez! Jason wakes up on school bus, holding hands with Piper and joking with Leo. It seems they’re going on a school trip. It all seems very simple, right? I’m sure it would be, if it wasn’t for the simple fact that Jason doesn’t know or remember those around him, and at the same time, he knows he’s not supposed to be there! When the group comes under attack from some vicious storm spirits their saving Grace comes in form of Annabeth Chase. However, Annabeth is not happy, she’s angry and frustrated, because as it turns out, she’s looking for her boyfriend Percy Jackson who’s missing.

I really enjoyed how the characters all came together to help save the day, they all help and support each other. Jason led them successfully and encouraged them the whole quest. Piper used her charmspeak to persuade the enemy or mortals to not kill them or lend them a helicopter. Brainiac Leo with his power of fire fixed and created almost any machine and even zapped a cyclops when Piper and Jason were about to get eaten.

This book is captivating and intriguing. The characters are so unique and so hilarious. You can totally relate to some of them. This book contain humour which is a plus. Love the action scenes. I love the romance that develops throughout the books between certain couples. I love this middle grade series. And I highly recommend it. Rick Riordan is one of my favourite authors.

I know Rick Riordan can write better than this and this was a miserable read. Like this was so bad to me where it diminished the original book series to me if you call this a continuation of the series (even though i understand this is a separate body of work). The Idea for this book and the next upcoming one in the series is actually very interesting but i was reading this book and could not care less. And personally a piece of that was Riordan's lack of 1st person narration in this book, in the first series a lot that enticed me was the inner monologue, it was a staple in the writing and kept me hooked but the lack of this in this book as well as the main character having amnesia was horrible to read, to the point that at the end 50 pages i was skimming cause i could not take it anymore. And i will give credit where credit is due because the first tinsy bit before we got int the quest the writing was still not as good as percy jackson but was still good enough where i wasnt going to complain about it but then it felt like the next 200 pages i was bored and the next 150 was Riordan throwing the towel in. next, this was a minor issue i had with the first series but became blatantly shown to me in this book that Riordan cannot write women, Pipers points in this book even though she had so much potential fell flat because they felt so Jason centered??? like what the hell her character has so much to work for and through and this is what she's thinking about? And her with Drew and the whole relationship Riordan has written with the Aphrodite cabin in general, calling them all shallow really irked me. Like there's not a single one that practices what they preach and love thy neighbor or smth cmonnnn and pipers "pick me, chose me, love me" beat in the cabin didn't really help even if she was valid in them it was just written poorly. And Leo was also just painfully there? like i liked the comedic relief i guess but idk it also kinda fell flat as it felt Riordan was just trying to copy what made the original series good which okay maybe he could've done if he just wrote this better this felt so rushed to me?? like in a scene he’s like omg i keep falling in love with these women who don’t like me back WOMP WOMP so he’s just as bad as piper in that aspect. like idk something about it wasn't there in this book something was majorly missing from this to make me care. Like this book was trying to piggy back of Percy Jackson but also be its own thing a little too hard and just needed to pick one in my opinion.

➸ 4.50 stars this was... life changing. i don't know where to start if not to say that i LOVE the new characters and mostly my girl PIPER MCLEAN !! i loved the way it is written, different povs and shorter chapters, this is what i was waiting for !! since the beginning i loved read again about all the details of the hbc, i missed it i have to tell you, and see it again through new eyes, through new characters was amazing. JASON literally a sweetheart, he doesn't deserve any kinde of hate and definitely doesn't deserve what happened to him. he is so careful and it's so sweet that he want to understand piper and leo's story first and then his, i'm so happy that he is the leader because he is really the best person ever, he is protective and charming and brave i just love him. and his relationship with thalia 😭😭 let me more scenes of the grace siblings PIPER MY GIRL MY GIRL MY GIRL. i've loved her since the first page. the thing that i loved the most about piper is the fact that she is an aphrodite's daughter, she is different from her sisters and brothers (because they told her that she isn't pretty like they are etc...) but at the same time she is the only one who truly understands the real virtues about aphrodite. she's strong, charming, brave and amazing. and her relationship with her father literally made me cry lot of times. LEO really an amazing complex character and i've loved him for this. he is fun and so smart, literally one of the smartest boys i've ever known or read about. his pawer is amazing and so uncommon so you clearly understand how much cool and important his character is !!!! on other hand he is a sweet boy and i wish i could hug him and tell him that i'm sososo so SO proud of him. the way he loved/loves his mom made me cry. he deserved her he deserved a mother. after all i missed my babies annabeth percy and grover but that's fine + i wanted percabeth moments but i knkw that they will be in the next books !!!! but i loved piper and jason together 💓💓💓 anyway THE LAST SENTENCE OF THE BOOK CHANGED MY BRAIN CHEMISTRY.

Was about time I post my review since I read this series back around 2019 . Like everyone else, I was genuinely confused who this white boy named Jason was. Admittedly, I also put this off because Percy was nowhere to be found and Annabeth says he's missing. But this book wasn't entirely bad. We got introduced to a new trio with a funny dynamic, and Rick certainly did a good job with exciting everyone for the next book in this series. I did have a hard time going through this because of the lack of Percy (I knew almost everyone did), but I'd give what I could to read this again for the first time.

FIRST READ REVIEW: 0ctober 12, 2012 Oh, Rick Riordan and his Percy Jackson series's. (that's very word. does anyone know the proper plural form of 'series'?) Firstly, If you HAVE not read the original Percy JAckson series, then stop looking at the reviews for this book and go read the original PJ series. A Basic understanding and knowledge of the original Percy Jackson series is a prerequisite for reading the series. That's right, I just said prerequisite, like in math pre-algebra is a prerequisite for Algebra, but no worries, you will not be thinking about math while reading Percy Jackson. now, that all that is over..... Hallelujah! let us praise Rick Riordan for writing another Percy Jackson series! Despite the fact that there are many book series where I and other fans would love a sequel series with mostly all the same characters, it doesn't happen very often. :( And I know some ppl who say Rick Riordan was just milking Percy Jackson for the money, but honestly... WHO CARES??? Percy Jackson is BACK, and that's all that matters! Of course, in this particular book, Percy Jackson is only mentioned in this book, not seen, but still! Now that I'm done talking about Percy Jackson, let's move on to the main characters of this book. Jason: Awesome. I need say no more about that. (view spoiler)[I like how he ended up being related to Thalia. I know you're like, well, they're both children of Zeus/Jupiter, of course they're related, but on their mom's side to. I just love how complicated and twisted that is. (hide spoiler)] Piper: is amazing. She's a daughter of Aphrodite, but she does absolute best to avoid everything shallow and pointless. and by the end of book, she's pretty tough. Leo: Ah, Leo. I love you. even if Khione wants you to die, and Thalia can't date you because she's a hunter of Artemis, I'M FREE!!!!! Seriously, I am not in a committed relationship, if you want my number, just ask. I cried when Festus broke. My Fave Quote from the book: "All right, cupcakes," Coach Hedge announced. "You are about to see the Grand Canyon. Try not to break it." -pg. 11

The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan is the fist of the The Heroes of Olympus series. It opens with Jason waking up on a bus, presumably on a field trip, with no memory of how he got there. Jason's day only gets stranger as wind spirits attack and he's soon whisked away to Camp Half Blood. He is as much a mystery to them as his missing memory is to him. His identity, though, is wrapped up in the disappearance of Percy Jackson and the kidnapping of a Goddess. The Heroes of Olympus series introduces the Roman aspects of Greco/Roman mythology. In school the two mythologies often times get mixed together into a single summary of gods, goddesses and heroes. Riordan, though, pulls the two apart and shows with stark detail how a god with two different names has to play by two very different sets of rules depending on which name he's invoked by. The most fun, though, for me was trying to figure out where the Roman twin to Camp Half Blood is. It's described in great detail as being in the Bay Area. As I live in the East Bay, not too far from the area described, I spent about an hour pin pointing different possible locations for the other camp. I will have to wait until I read Son of Neptune to see if I'm right about the location. I do have the book on hand, I just need to make time to read it off my to be read pile.

I was dubious about this book mainly because I have read the whole Percy Jackson series and loved it and fear it may not live to my expectations of Rick Riordan's past books, but it was better. Riordan combines mythology in a way not seen before giving us back great characters along with fresh new faces to makes us swoon, sigh and want to rip them apart. Overall, is a must read for every Percy Jackson fan and for everyone with a love to Greek and Roman mythology.

That took me significantly longer than I expected. Hekkin life kept getting in the way 🙃 My past struggles with Jason as a character are ever present (I just...can't quite *like* the guy, you know?), but nonetheless this still gets 5 stars on re-read. One of my favorite things with this series is the slow reveal. It's excruciating, and it's not super hard to put together (or maybe that's just with my knowledge of the future) but somehow that slow drip of information is all the more thrilling. I wish I could say more concrete things - I think Riordan's character work is absolutely masterful, and his storytelling is fantastic as always. Instead of coherent thoughts I have notes, and now I'm going to finish some of my other books so I can pick up The Son of Neptune which is one of my favorites from the series. (view spoiler)[ *I have always struggled with Jason as a character. I've been pivoting my character opinions with this reread though, so perhaps that'll be different this time. *LEO VALDEZ SUPREMACY AKDFA;LDKFA;D *Gleeson Hedge, bless up 😭 *"valuable nature skills like running ten miles a day through the cacti" *Racism 😠 *"You are about to see the Grand Canyon. Try not to break it." *You're going to do a lot of talking about Roman vs. Greek later, actually *Goat fu?? 😅 *ANNABETH HECK YEAH *One of my favorite things about this series is that we find out that Annabeth and Percy are like a super-scary power couple, and we didn't know this before because they themselves have no idea *The first time I read this I LOST MY MIND when they name-dropped Percy. That was part of the reason I had so much trouble with Jason - I was excited for more Percy, and got Jason instead (kind of how Annabeth probably feels right now) *The idea that Apollo's kids are fantastic basketball players because they're a "bunch of show-offs with missile weapons" is hilarious to me *"More like the future mugs me from time to time." *You know, Piper is the first to bring this up, but it does seem a little questionable that their camp counselor is the god of wine 😆 *Ugh, Hera 🙄 *(Hera we go, hyuck hyuck) *I find Seymour very unsettling *Also are snausages a real thing, because I find them upsetting too *Chiron not being able to give Annabeth more information is actually quite painful *Clovis knows weirdly a lot about Zeus and his eating preferences 😆 *It would be so incredibly not cool to wake up and have Argus be one of the first things you see *Piper and I feel the same way about campfire songs *Ares cabin needs to take a chill pill, killing people during capture the flag was never on the menu *Drew has chalice chipper vibes?? (For legal reasons this is a joke) *Chiron shall henceforth be known as Captain Sunshine, because it is incredibly apt *Rachel really does these prophecies on command *Our first Gaea spotting is a massive nope *Hippie Zeus *"mugged by my own mom" *Gosh Drew is the worst *Hockey Ox and the Groovy Love God sounds like a very intriguing middle grade novel *"Our Jason was more stylish" ouch *C'mon, Leo, you can do better than the literal ice queen 😅 *The idea that Piper can speak French because it's "the language of love" is quite funny *And then Boreas speaks English anyway lol *"We are to crush your little mortal faces" ah I see thank you *Jason has no idea how bad snow can be *FESTUS NOOOOO *Piper breaking her ankle lives in my brain, which I'd rather it didn't *Rambo food *Also she hekkin needs to tell them the truth *DUDE CHILL OUT WITH THE AMBROSIA 😳😳 *Leo "I'm a freaking menace" Valdez *I understand Hera's analogy, but if you get your foot caught in a bear trap you don't have that foot anymore *Jason is easily coerced into fighting his friends/allies, isn't he *Organic life forms, man, I feel *"Machines don't have sarcasm, usually." *Sports medicine 😂 *I totally forgot that Jason's spear was broken on Mount Diablo *Dude the slow burn reveal of Jason's past is k i l l i n g m e. *""Nothing is unfixable." Except the thought that you're gone forever, Leo thought." *Hera vs. A heat lamp or a bag of fertilizer, spot five differences (it's the same picture) *Omgosh Thalia 😭 *Dude Leo and Piper are so OP, this battle is wild *FREAKING HERA OMGOSH 🤣 "Her Majesty the Loose Cannon" *An aardvark is a very specific threat 😐 *I now have my own personal headcanon that Piper goes and talks to those demigod actor friends of her dad's, and they bond *Everyone needs a spankin' hot war machine in their life *You guys it's too much, I have to read the next one THAT LAST LINE HOLY CATS (hide spoiler)]

Leo had never been the biggest or the strongest kid. He’d survived in tough neighborhoods, tough schools, tough foster homes by using his wits. He was the class clown, the court jester, because he’d learned early that if you cracked jokes and pretended you weren’t scared, you usually didn’t get beat up. Even the baddest gangster kids would tolerate you, keep you around for laughs. Plus, humor was a good way to hide the pain. And if that didn’t work, there was always Plan B. Run away. Over and over.

Photo of martina klix
martina klix @martinaklix

Leo looked around at the other campers. Was he really related to all of them? His cousins came from some big families, but he’d always just had his mom—until she died.

Photo of martina klix
martina klix @martinaklix

As they were leaving, Leo looked back at his new bed, and he could almost imagine a dead counselor sitting there—another ghost who wasn’t going to leave Leo alone

Photo of martina klix
martina klix @martinaklix

He pushed that thought away. He didn’t like painful memories. Keep moving— that was his motto. Don’t dwell on things. Don’t stay in one place too long. It was the only way to stay ahead of the sadness.

Photo of martina klix
martina klix @martinaklix

Leo wanted to protest, but when he looked back toward the big white cabin, Tía Callida was gone. He was sure she’d been there, almost as if thinking about his mom had summoned Callida back from the past.

And that wasn’t good, because Tía Callida had tried to kill him.

Annabeth nodded, but it was clear she wasn’t really listening. Her shoulders drooped. She rubbed her face and took a shaky breath. “Sorry. A little tired.”

“You look ready to drop,” Piper said. “How long have been searching for your boyfriend?”

“Three days, six hours, and about twelve minutes.”

“And you’ve got no idea what happened to him?”

Annabeth shook her head miserably. “We were so excited because we both started winter break early. We met up at camp on Tuesday, figured we had three weeks together. It was going to be great. Then after the campfire, he—he kissed me good night, went back to his cabin, and in the morning, he was gone. We searched the whole camp. We contacted his mom. We’ve tried to reach him every way we know how. Nothing. He just disappeared."

Photo of martina klix
martina klix @martinaklix

All the energy drained out of Annabeth, like she’d been holding it together for as long as she could. She sat down on a rock, and her expression was so full of pain, Piper felt like a voyeur.

Photo of martina klix
martina klix @martinaklix

“Right. It’s because we’re hardwired for battle. Restless, impulsive—we don’t fit in with regular kids. You should hear how much trouble Percy—” Her face darkened.

Photo of martina klix

Before Annabeth could explain, Will said, “Any sign of Percy?”

“No,” Annabeth admitted.

The campers muttered. Piper had no idea who this guy Percy was, but his disappearance seemed to be a big deal.

She pulled a knife and ran toward Jason’s group while the bulky dude was reining in the horses.

“Where is he?” the girl demanded. Her gray eyes were fierce and a little startling.

“Where’s who?” Jason asked.

[...]

“No, no, no! She told me he would be here. She told me if I came here, I’d find the answer.”

[...]

“What problem?” Piper asked.

“She’s been looking for one of our campers, who’s been missing three days,” Butch said. “She’s going out of her mind with worry. She hoped he’d be here.”

“Who?” Jason asked.

“Her boyfriend,” Butch said. “A guy named Percy Jackson.”

“Leo,” Jason said, “you’re weird.”

“Yeah, you tell me that a lot.” Leo grinned. “But if you don’t rememberme, that means I can reuse all my old jokes. Come on!”

Jason figured that if this was his best friend, his life must be pretty messed up.

But Piper kept her eyes on Jason, like she couldn’t decide whether to be hurt or worried.

Jason shrugged helplessly.
