I really enjoyed this story. I'm sure that some will feel that the pace of the story is a bit slow at the beginning but I felt that it really dealt with the dynamics of the Romani culture and Bethan's life. As a result, I never found myself wishing that it would pick up pace. The author does forewarn that there is a sexual assault/rape in the story. However, it's handled in a way that it moves the plot along without being gratuitous or sensationalized. I don't know if this is the right terminology but the aftermath of the rape was fascinating in that the author doesn't gloss over the emotional consequences to Bethan in favor of making this all about revenge. In particular, I found Bethan's referral to herself as another person in the aftermath compelling. I will note that there is one particular scene where punishment is meted out that I found a bit gruesome but it would not stop me from recommending this book to others.
