adachi's a very interesting character and in the beginning of the story i could see how so many identified with her, however eccentric she presented herself to be --- the experience of obsessing over someone because they're your first real connection and how it comes with stupidly passionate possessiveness that, to anyone else, appears very obviously stilted and flawed. ++ the over-the-top dramatism of wanting to be shimamura's number One and romanticising her every trait is, unfortunately, true to life (to an extent).

i can't say i like how adachi's character went in the story, or her 5-minute long outburst to shimamura. while i did enjoy learning about her initially i eventually grew exhausted of her extreme fixation on shimamura: it's obvious to everyone in the audience, including shimamura, that adachi's development would logically involve a broadening of her social circles to quell her dependency. it's so clearly not healthy to think about one singular person every waking minute of your life, and i think it's less romantic and more pathetic to have your every emotion & your very world revolve around what this person says, what this person does. i'm aware there are narrative reasons for having adachi reject this version of development (for one, it Would be slightly cliche), but damnnnn i can't take her telling shimamura talking to friends is cheating for a moment longer. Yes i know it's intended to portray how adachi's obsession becomes a way to restrict and control shimamura but it doesn't read in a way that satisfies the reader and keeps them coming 😅 or maybe it's just me.

shimamura conversely is refreshing compared to adachi, and i liked the initial anxious vs avoidant (with their own separate histories and reasons) premise her personality offered. on paper, it's interesting how she keeps people at a distance and doesn't let anyone enter her heart. but because of these traits she possesses, it makes even less sense for her to tolerate adachi to such an extent she ends up going out with her ???? like i know she really doesn't gaf but shimamura is a saint because adachi's hold over her has GOT to be insanely irritating at one point or another. i felt that her moments of sentimentality towards adachi were slightly forced at times to continue narrative progression in a more conventional route despite their differing personalities that could've made the story so much more fulfilling.

liked the dog named gon though. Rip my goat.
