I was on an action packed holiday while I read this book so it took me two weeks to get through, and I am not sure if that affected how I felt about this story but I didn't love this book as much as I thought I would. I mean, it was fine. It kept me interested for the most part, the mystery was fascinating and it was written in a really clever way that had me second guessing who I suspected at every turn, and this is something Holly Jackson really excels at in her books. The premise as a whole was really compelling and quite unique in my opinion, although I don't read a lot of mystery so I can stand 10 toes down on that statement, but from what I have read, this was a different and fun idea. But I think the execution and pacing just didn't quite work for me, and I'm not sure I really liked our main character, Bel, very much. I think I just feel a bit meh about this book, and that's ok, not every book is going to blow me away!

On the topic of Bel, I found her character very mean and I didn't like that very much. I tried to understand her perspective because she's been through a lot in her 18 years of life. Her mother, Rachel, disappeared when she was just a toddler so her entire life growing up has been wrapped in the mystery of what happened to Rachel and because of that she has pushed a lot of people away from her, especially the ones who believed her father, the parent that raised her and cared for her and "stayed", perhaps killed Rachel. A few other traumatic things also happened along the way too which I think adequately explained why Bel was stand offish at times, but I don't think it justified how cruel she could be. She was distrustful of Rachel when she reappeared, which makes sense, but the way she handled it was a bit nasty. Even her closest friend, Carter, was upset at how Bel was acting and treating those around her, and I really think that spoke volumes. Plus, Bel's inner thoughts about Ash were just pure bullying most of the time and I absolutely hated that. To be honest, most of the characters in this book were unlikable, and that worked in favour of the storyline in parts, for example, it definitely made almost everyone a suspect, but I don't think it was handled quite as well as I would've liked, personally.

The first half of this book is quite slow pacing which made it drag a bit. It hinges a lot on the dialogue between the family and their relationships, which makes sense once you get to the end of the story, but while you're reading it, it feels like a bit of a trudge. The interviews, the dinner scene, the interactions between Rachel, Charlie and Bel were quite pyschological but not in a truly thrilling way. Things really started to ramp up in the second half of the book with more action and intrigue, and I thought the overall mystery and the ending of the book were quite clever and managed to weave in a good message about how moments matter even if the people you shared those moments with don't stay in your life forever. It also touched on and showcased gaslighting and manipulation quite well, the way Bel, Rachel and even us as the reader were driven to doubt themselves/ourselves was well done, but I didn't feel like it had enough oomph to it to really shock me. I don't know, I think I'm in two minds about this book, because I can see where it shone but I also can't say I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I would recommend this book, I think it is worth a read and I do see why some people enjoyed it a lot more than I did. It definitely wasn't as good as AGGGTM in my opinion, but I will still continue to read anything Holly Jackson reads because I really do enjoy the way her mind works in creating these mysteries! I think this is a case of a good premise, with some really clever twists and subtle but strong messaging, but that it wasn't executed in a way that connected to me, and in the end felt a bit like a let down, even if there were still moments where it entertained me. I can't fully put my finger on it, but I think mostly the cast of characters and the pacing just didn't have enough balance to really draw me, Ash and Carter ended up being my favourite characters, and I think the way Carter went about unravelling the mystery was a lot more kind and intelligent than Bel's way in the end. A solid good, but not quite great book!

love love love this book!!! it was so addictive, i couldn't put it down. the rollercoaster of emotion i went through in just three hours was crazyyyy. holly jackson is such a good writer, thrillers are truly her calling. also,,, ash my beloved <3

I didn't really like how it all played out in the end so I was a little bit disappointed by it.

Also I hate when questions are left unanswered so the ending was even more unsatisfying plus the fact that some parts didn't really make sense if you look at character continuity.

This was a longer audio book but it was very quick paced and had me hooked from the start!! Holly Jackson has such a way at writing somewhat annoying female main characters lol but I love that they are never perfect and always have their own flaws!

seperti biasa, the twist is something. i dunno apakah karena i finished this book too quickly atau emang begitu, tapi pas di akhir tuh berasa ngos-ngosan karena berasa kayak si rachel info dumping tentang seluruh cerita about her disappearance. i feel like too much info to absorb/process, but also can’t think about the best way to let bel knows about what happened.

i hated the ending so much!!! i loved charlie and he turned out to be a pyscho? when i finished the book i felt angry and annoyed

I love Ash and Bel. But I’ll be honest, the relationships weren’t as strong as they were in AGGGTM. 

So while I absolutely loved the book, ESPECIALLY THE END. I wouldn’t put this book ahead of AGGGTM.

I loved the writting of this book, i loved the plot, i loved the idea, and I liked some of the characters. But what really just diminished this rating was the length of the book. 500 pages is far too long for a thriller; most thrillers are in the range of 300-400 and I think once a reader hits a certain number pages, they don't even care anymore, and just want to skip to the end and see what happens. This book is fast paced in terms of reading ability, as all Holly Jackson books are But the plot is so so so slow, there's a rare bits of development over a span of 150 pages, and it took to get to chapter 37 to finally see some actual action. Furthermore, I just found bell infsufferable because of how horrible she was to her mother. And I don't find her sarcasm rudness as funny or witty, she just seems like a rude person. Finally, as we neared the end, it just became more and more absurd. I like to have thriller books that have some kind of realistic touch to them, but it just became increasingly ridiculous.

plot wise i really enjoyed it, i don’t read mysteries that often but when i do i always pick my unsub on the very first chapter and this time i didn’t miss, although i did doubt it at some point but it all came back to that person so it was just perfect. 

don’t get me wrong, knowing who was it doesn’t get the excitement out of the book for me, i enjoy it more, because i finally had the whole story and boy it was a good one, realistic and probably, if you think about it, more common than what we want to believe.
