Actually it's 3,5 stars. The ending was way too depressive.

I was not impressed by this book. It may not be my cup of tea but there are several things that leave me disinclined to appreciate the book. One, the title character is incredibly depressing. I'm not a fan books that bring me down. Two, the relationships between the characters is not always obvious which leads to some confusion. Three, some characters are thrust into prominence only to be withdrawn chapters later without explanation. Four, the transitions between scenes are practically nonexistent. Five, the characters do not progress or grow. They are all quite static. There is nothing that compels me to recommend this book.

The message is worth 5 stars, I am however reviewing from 2019, where the language is obviously a bit dated. However, I have read classics where I wasn't distracted the entire time.
