Horrorstor A Novel

Grady Hendrix2014
From the New York Times best-selling author of The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires comes a hilarious and terrifying haunted house story in a thoroughly contemporary setting: a furniture superstore. Something strange is happening at the Orsk furniture superstore in Cleveland, Ohio. Every morning, employees arrive to find broken Kjerring bookshelves, shattered Glans water goblets, and smashed Liripip wardrobes. Sales are down, security cameras reveal nothing, and store managers are panicking. To unravel the mystery, three employees volunteer to work a nine-hour dusk-till-dawn shift. In the dead of the night, they’ll patrol the empty showroom floor, investigate strange sights and sounds, and encounter horrors that defy the imagination.

I read everywhere that Horrorstör is a combination of horror and comedy, but I have no idea where the comedy part took place.

Except from missing the comedy aspect of the book, it's an absolute recommendation. It's scary and sooo much wilder than I expected it to be.

The book was sometimes hard to understand and the writing style is a bit complex

This was a very fast paced and easy read. The overall story is funny and spooky, definitely an interesting plot. I like how the book was also styled between a mix of employee handbook and sales catalog, the little touches really add a little extra something to the book in my opinion. Im definitely interested in reading more from this author.

I really love the concept. I'm a sucker for isolated horrors/thrillers and using such a unique setting was the draw for me, but I can't help but feel a little disappointed? I kind of felt a bit disconnected from the characters tbh. Because it's fairly short you never get to really know them and the whole book takes place over a 24hr period. There's also a little bit of dumb decision-making throughout, which is frustrating, but fairly forgettable once you're pulled into whatever is going on. It was a lot gorier than I was expecting and gore is kind of whatever to me. Personally I find it kind of boring? And a lot of the descriptions were so overdramatic that it would ruin the immersion for me. I would have enjoyed the book way more if it focused more on the creepy, paranormal aspects rather than devolving into gore constantly. I would say this book is more 'Saw' than the Infinite Ikea SCP. I would have preferred the latter, but that's just my personal taste. Overall I still had a reasonably fun time. I can't say I got scared or even creeped out, but there are enough concepts in here to enjoy and some really great social commentary sprinkled throughout. If you have ever worked a shitty retail job then you will feel very seen by this book lol.

A delightful mix of satire and horror, it makes powering through this book easy. The horror is more gore than anything, but it's still unsettling to read through. Especially if you've ever worked a retail job before.

My goodness!! This book was really creepy, suspenseful and had a great storyline. There wasn't a lot of time to being attached to the side characters however I managed to get attached to Amy and Basil who also had some great character development. I really liked how we got to see the effects of the events and loved the ending!

I decided to read Horrorstör because the concept stood out to me. I haven’t really heard of horror stories taking place in a setting like this. Even the way the book was designed like a catalog caught my attention. But I finally decided to pick it up because it is now October and wanted to read more scary and horror type books. Most of the reviews said the book legitimately scared them. I really wanted this book to scare me, even just a little, because horror movies and books do not usually scare me. It did not scare me. Not even a little. I don’t blame the book for that, i’m just really hard to scare, but I can see how people could generally be scared by it. I couldn’t personally connect or relate to any of the characters. Although I enjoyed the characters, I never really felt more attached to one than the other. But there was definitely character development. You could see how the events that were happening in the store were affecting the characters as the plot continued. The writing in this book was great. The plot was interesting, different, and fast paced once you got about half way. Overall I quite enjoyed reading this thrilling horror story to help get me in the Halloween spirit.

The book was fine definitely had creepy vibes the packaging is always on point for Grady Hendrix but I can tell that this was one of his first stories everything seems very open ended. Quite possible this author just isn’t for me.

Super fun and quick read! The perfect mix of funny and scary. For the most part is was pretty mild - but there were parts where I had to put the book down at night because it was freaking me out. Would make a fun movie.
