I like true crime novels, but don’t read them often. I bought this book because the story was intriguing. The level of child abuse and control is horrifying. There are some pretty graphic photos set in the center of the book. I would suggest not looking at them, as the captions divulge a few “spoilers.” Although, as true crime goes, some of the book is pretty predictable anyway. 
My issue with the book is the writing itself. The author is all over the place with dates, names, places. Some of the prose is disjointed and difficult to follow. There are some misspelled words and in one part of the book, the author even uses two different spellings of one person’s name. I wish the author had used either given names or nicknames throughout the book instead of switching back and forth. 
Overall, it is a good story, but the content is very dark. So hard to believe families like this exist, but they do.

I have no words. Seriously. None. Will come back to this to review some more after I process it all. As a book it was well-written. I feel guilty giving it three stars just due to the subject matter at hand, but I also feel like I'm cheating the author his due because its clear he did his research on this. How he slept at night I do not know. This was my first true crime book - I jumped in head first with this one.
