           just some (pointless) thoughts

i give generous ratings, so this probably deserves a 2.5 or something. this feels so rude thought but this was not it. for a book that places so much emphasis on prom, it was barely discussed and only one important scene took place there? that bugged me particularly because i was trying to live out my own prom dreams vicariously through this book. so that let me down.

overall though, this book just didn't feel fully developed. it could have used a few hundred more pages and more of a plot. the fake dating sounded very interesting, but it wasn't fully used. the main character even recognized it was a trope but then the book did nothing to subvert it? i don't mind fake dating at all but don't say it's cliche if you're not going to subvert it

also so many good discussions could have been had here about foster care, bullying, acceptance of other people's identities, but none were had in this book. everything was so surface level and that just made me sad because this had so much potential. the relationship was also so hard to believe and felt completely undeveloped. if nothing else, that should have been written well, but nope
