I have been a fan of Cat Marnell's since xoJane (and her favourite boss Jean Godfrey-June's book is also great!) so I couldn't wait for this memoir. It really lived up to the hype. Cat's voice is as honest and real and funny as ever. But it was also much more emotional than I expected. I hope there's more to follow.

Sad, funny and shocking. I raced through this, constantly thinking to myself 'Surely things can't get worse?' (Sidenote: They did!). Cat's writing mixes the glossy world of fashion magazines (swag) with grimy world of addiction, making you laugh and wanting to scream some sense into her all at once.

I feel like most addiction books are focused on recovery efforts, but this book was very much about the desire to feed the addiction. Cat Marnell is passionate about magazines and getting high. She writes about her father writing her first prescription for Adderall, a drug that helped her excel before eventually leading her to other drugs. She's candid about drug use and the fact that the book ends with her still casually using even though she says she's got her life mostly together is incredibly sad. Her entire brand is essentially built on her being a witty drugged out mess. Still, even as I felt sorry for her I kept listening. I had to finish this book because she is as talented as she's always been. Her writing is funny and sad and one of the most honest looks at what addiction really means for the people who don't ever recover. I think pop culture has allowed me to kind of buy into this recovered addict concept but you're never really recovered. It's a disease that never really leaves a person. Cat's just more honest about her ups and downs than most.
