Dull characters. Ugly san serif type face. Weird use of pink. Pages and page of phone transcripts. Oddly the bit about the dead but actually institutionalized brother was the most realistic piece of this (in that I had a neighbor growing up who it turned out had an institutionalized sibling that everyone either pretended didn't exist or was dead).

This is  NOT a teen romance.

This is about two strange and outcasted young people who find comfort in the other’s company.

This fact is merely the best part of this book. There isn’t a love triangle like most novels have. There is some love, but it is NOT the focus of the book.

Beatrice = Robot Girl
Jonah = Ghost Boy

These two find each other their senior year. Bea moved, once again, to a different school in a different town. She had to make new friends and didn’t expect to find someone she connected with as well as she did with Jonah. 

Jonah is the outcast of the school because he doesn’t talk and he barely is there. They made a horrible joke in seventh grade that gave him the nickname he has (Ghost Boy). He had a traumatic childhood and it is ever-so the center of the book. Jonah finds out a horrible secret one of his parents kept from him and he is determined to make it right.

Beatrice’s best friend was her mother until she started having mental breakdowns and had a weird love for chicken for every meal of every day. Her father is very distant and spends a lot of time at work. Her family has their own secrets that are waiting to be unraveled.

I picked up this book because it was on a list I read about “YA Mental Illness Books.” Though it doesn’t come out and say it, you learn more about depression in this book not from the inside of one’s thoughts but through someone’s eyes. It was an interesting read and I would suggest it to someone.
