Cynicism is a form of despair, and despair is the antithesis of hope. The cynic doesn't want the world's ills cured: the worse things become, the more the cynic's gloomy prognostications are confirmed. Bad news is therefore good news, and good news merely a temporary blip on the cynic's darkening horizon.

All I was thinking through reading this book was “where was the editor?”. While the author is no stranger to good writing, the book is haphazardly put together and doesn’t feel like a cohesive whole. The message often gets lost, which is a shame.
