Good book.
An observation I had: even though Lisa spends the whole book telling you how fat she is, I thin we can assume that she is probably pretty skinny. But if she is skinny, why does she think she’s so fat? I think it’s like this: anorexic girls can’t see themselves clearly. It’s like they’re in a hall of mirrors (lie at a carnival) and they’re always in front of the mirror that makes them look fat. They can’t tell when they’re skinny, because if they could, anorexia wouldn’t be near so bad.
See? This book made me think deep thoughts.

Hunger by Jackie Morse Kessler is the first of the Riders of the Apocalypse series. The others are Rage (2011), Loss (2012) and Breath (2013).

The book opens with Lisabeth accidentally accepting the position of Famine. She has a black steed who likes cookies. She likes the horse but she doesn't want the job.

Lisabeth is also suffering with her own special form of famine — anorexia. Most of the book is about the negative effects of anorexia, body image and the stress teens (especially girls) go through. As Lisabeth fights her own demons she also fights with her parents and friends, alienating herself when she needs them most.

Hunger for a YA is a short book, coming in at 175 pages. It's really more of a long novella then a full length fantasy. There's not much time to get to know Lisabeth beyond her fight with anorexia and her revulsion at being Famine.

Jackie Morse Kessler weaves a dramatic YA read about a real subject that in today's world where appearances are everything is killing many people, coated with a bit of fantasy and just enough humour she writes about the 4 Horsemen of Apocalypse and what would happen if an anorexic girl was chosen as Famine, the Dark Rider.

Hunger is an enthralling read that talks about the struggle of a girl with her body, after been caught in a catch-22 situation by Death she finds herself engrossed by her job as Famine where she must look at hunger everyday. 
Hunger shows the importance of friendship and how bad relations can trap you and that sometimes appearance are not everything.

 Though a bit short in pages the book is large in history and everyone can relate to the character's pain to be thin and with her discomfort with her own body. Fast-passed and captivating Hunger is sure to make you spent a nice time and then ponder over the concept of beauty today.

Altogether, Hunger is definitely recommendable and can't wait to read more of her books.

Hunger tells the story of Lisabeth Lewis, a teenage girl struggling with bulimia. One night, Lisa contemplates taking too many antidepressant pills in order to end her life, but is visited by Death before the act is complete. Death wants Lisa to be the next Famine, one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse. Lisa continues to struggle with bulimia and with her new occupation as Famine, but she finally learns her new powers don't have to be used for destruction. Lisa's character progression was definitely fun to follow and as her self confidence grew she finally understood her way of life was harmful and that she needed help. I also found it interesting how the author based the story off of her own struggles with bulimia. Overall, it was definitely a great book and uplifting story that was a quick read.
