I Hate Fairyland 1: Madly Ever After (I Hate Fairyland, 1).

Read on September 27, 2016. This is the most violent, messed-up, rainbow-splattered piece of amazeballs I've ever read. Now if you excuse me, I must track down everything Skottie Young has ever created, and hopefully it's not going to take me 27 years.

I FLUFFING LOVED THIS BOOK! Ahem... I Hate Fairyland is bloody HILARIOUS! At first glance, it looks like a silly whimsical journey through fairyland, but then the axes come out, followed by the rocket launchers... It's a bit like a horribly twisted version of Calvin and Hobbes where gore and excessive drinking are common adventure themes rather than imaginary tigers. And how awesome is that?!!? Meet Gertrude: Cute, innocent little Gertrude was sucked into Fairy Land to fulfill her destiny! She was sent on a journey to find a key to get home, a dream all little girls crave. But that was 27 years ago for poor Gertrude, and she's lost patience for this game. Despite three decades almost passing, Gertrude is stuck as an eight year old. But do not doubt that this eight year can kick your ass because she's lost her fear and instinctual ability not to kick things bigger than she is long ago. Gertrude is a menace. In her quest for her key, she causes havoc and destruction all across Fairy Land, to the point that the Queen snaps and tries to have her murdered. Gertrude, as you will see, is not exactly an easy person to kill, and the book follows her deadly adventures trying to escape Fairy Land while assassins are after her! Cue explosions, implausible acts of violence, and crazy candy coated ridiculousness! I had no idea that this book existed before I spotted it on NetGalley, and now I will sing its praises to those who want to have a terrifically good laugh! Fun concept. But it was way too random and messy. Also trying a biiiiiit too hard to be edgy.

Why Lovely Gertrude, the enchantingly charismatic main character in this graphic novel, is my dream child : ① She has the mostest awesomest name ever in the history of mostest awesomest names ever. ② She is a 37-year-old in a sometimes slightly damaged super cute 10-year-old's body. Such a youthfully gorgeous heroine indeed. ③ She has the sweetest disposition ever. Gertrude dear, you are such a darling. Why aren't all children like you, I wonder? ④ Her delightfully flowery language would make Lord Alfred Tennyson proud. Ah, the Fluff Thing (FT™). Were I not (for obvious reasons) already a slave fan of the Fish This, Fish That Thing (FTFTT™), I'd definitely adopt the FT™ as my Go-To Cursing System (GTCS™). ⑤ She is a gentle, caring, compassionate child with homicidal tendencies lots of love to give. Yes, she has quite a knack for making lifelong friends indeed. Gertie here really is the mostest perfectest child, is she not? She slaughters away gleefully always plays nice, curses like a truckload of foul-mouthed sailors expresses herself in the quaintest, most charming way and is quite certainly the most bitter, vengeful, nasty sweetest-tempered girl you'll ever get to meet. A dream child, I tell you! No wonder revoltingly cheery tarts some of her playmates sometimes try to kill her with disgusting rainbows keep flowering her with adorable outbursts of colorful explosions. If anyone deserves it, it's definitely Sweet Gertie here. And the beauty of it is, she always reacts so very graciously to those vile assaults loving displays of affection. I mean, other kids would probably respond badly if put in such a fluffing predicament an awkward situation. I'm pretty sure some would even be "forever teetering on the edge of a riddle-induced psychotic break and the dark abyss of a diabetic coma." But Gentle Gertie here? That is just not her. Nope nope nope. Because she is all love, kindness, tolerance, affection, cheerfulness, compassion and pure, unadulterated congeniality. Not sure what I was expecting but definitely not this. Started off enjoying it but had lost interest by issue #3.

I ain’t happy, feeling glad I got sunshine in a bag. I’m useless but not for long, the future is coming on…. This is the first song that came to my mind after I finished. How on earth did this great comic slide under my radar? Special thanks to booktuber Ms. Valisa for bringing this to my attention. She marketed it for readers who like Harley Quinn. That was all it took to sell me. Fairyland delivered page after page on content and visuals. Pure comedic gold. Stunning coloring and detailed graphics. Gore and violence galore. A++ Luckily for me I have the next volume in hand to dive into.

My God this was amazing. I really hope there is more. It was gory, it was cynical, and a great introspection of what if the main character never found their way? This has become one of my favorite comics so far! Will more than likely make a full review later.

A story about a girl who has failed what should have been an easy quest and turned really bitter and violent about it was pretty much exactly what I needed today. This graphic novel is brutal, bloody, explicitly violent, with a rather morbid sense of humor. I appreciate all of that. Even if you are sensitive to some gore, this one is a bit more bearable than usual because the art is more cartoonish than realistic, so it is not as scary. Maybe. I am not sure that is what I mean, but yeah. That. It didn't really make me laugh out loud, but I do appreciate the humor and how Gert challenges the status quo. She is evil, sure, but it is like, whatever, let's just kill the next thing and move along.

This was hilarious. Such a fun idea and I adore Gert. The art is so vibrant and colourful which is so at odds with Gert's dark nature. Looking forward to the next volume :)
