i really liked this retelling. it really felt like a new story and i think thats all you want from a retelling

i was close to DNF-ing but decided to just get on with it. the main thing i got out of Pride was that i want to read Pride & Prejudice now lol. 

i felt like the story had potential, but i would've enjoyed it much more if i could relate to/like the MC. i know characters aren't meant to be "likable" or "relatable," but i couldn't help but feel that she was SO judgmental and cynical. it didn't help that she was inconsistent and i couldn't get a read on her. AND the relationship was dry. such!! a!! bummer!!

but i didn't hate everything! i loved the family aspect. i loved the dynamics between people. i loved the new york/brooklyn/bushwick aspect. the last one was especially relatable since i'm currently staying at my sister's apartment in bushwick, brooklyn so i could understand all the references and get what she was talking about. yeah, those were all great.

however, because i'm very much a character-driven reader, i couldn't bring myself to enjoy Pride as much as i liked. i didn't dislike it, but i didn't like it either. i can imagine myself forgetting a lot of what happened in the book a few months from now. and somehow, that's worse. (i think a 3 star round up would be accurate but i'm trying to be more critical in my rating so....)

Oh, this was a lovely modern-day retelling of Pride and Prejudice. It took a little while to hook me, but when the pieces fell into place, it made my heart feel so full. Darius Darcy guys!
