I just didn't love this like I expected. I had heard rave reviews but personally found it very, very slow. Solveig was a character I didn't decide if I truly liked and empathized with until the very end and the characters I believe I was supposed to feel sympathy and understanding for I hated with a burning passion. The climax was a slow, slow, slow build and then I found the ending abrupt and the interaction with her father completely unbelievable.

A pronunciation guide would have been very helpful in this book. I listened to the middle part of the book on audio while driving on a short road trip and the pronunciation of all but the main characters was so different from how I pronounced it in my head that I had trouble identifying which characters were which. This also made me realize that Kirby had not developed a distinctive voice for any of the characters if I became unable to identify the character solely because the name was pronounced differently.

When I picked up this book, I had high expectations. I had already read one of Mr. Kirby's other books and loved it, so I was really excited to try this one. 

Even with high expectations, this book surpassed them all. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. The characters were great, the plot was exciting, and the writing was fantastic.
