I really like the way anger and (self) alienation is handled in this book as a young girl grapples with her mother's cancer, her father's response and having to go back to school after being home-schooled. It provides a tale about being the centre of your own universe but not always that of others and some lovely role models of teachers who care and fellow students who don't give up with an angry young girl.
