In the Skin of a Lion

Gorgeous, cinematic storylines (nuns slipping off aqueducts? in the mist? Big pioneering public works projects? Workers liberation movements, puppet theatre and professional dynamiters?) but not sure they came together in that sublime, elegant way that blew my mind in The English Patient. I got a bit lost in the middle at least and not sure I felt the climactic showdown in the way it was intended. Or maybe that was the point. Unsure!

Saw it described as a very Canadian novel, true I think! Think he writes people so well though.

Michael Ondaatje-യുടെ "In the Skin of a Lion" എന്ന നോവലിനെ പരിചയെപ്പെടുത്തിക്കൊണ്ട് എഴുത്തുകാരിയായ Anne Enright പറയുന്നത് അത് പുതുതായി എഴുതിത്തുടങ്ങുന്നവരെ കാണിയ്ക്കരുത് എന്നാണ് -"that should be prised out of their clutching fingers and locked away until they are all grown up and ready to read them without being smitten." അസാധ്യമായ കാര്യങ്ങൾ ചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരു നോവൽ എന്നാണ് അവരുടെ വിശേഷണം. മലയാളി വായനക്കാരിൽ പലരും അനുഭൂതിയ്ക്കു വേണ്ടി വായിക്കാൻ കഴിയുക എന്നത് ഒരവശ്യഘടകമായി എടുത്തു പറയാറുണ്ട്. ഈ നോവലിലെ ഭാഷ 'കവിതാ'മയമാണ്, എന്നാൽ ഇവിടെ കാണപ്പെടുന്ന ഭാഷയുടെ വഴക്കവും പാകതയും ഇത്തരത്തിലുള്ള പല എഴുത്തുകളിലും കാണാൻ കഴിയുകയില്ല എന്നതാണ് സത്യം. ശ്വാസം പോലും ഭാഷയാകുന്നതിനെപ്പറ്റി നോവലിൽ ഒരിടത്തു വിവരണമുണ്ട്. “His breath is now almost whisper, almost language. She turns, a pearl embedded in her flesh. A violin with stars walking in this house. Fridge light sink light street light. At the sink she douses her face and shoulders. She lies beside him. The taste of the other. A bazaar of muscles and flavours. Her shoulders bang against the blue-stained cupboard. A kitchen being fucked. Sexual portage. Her body forked off him.” നേർരേഖയിലുള്ള കഥ പറച്ചിലുമല്ല ഈ നോവലിലേത്. Patrick എന്ന കഥാപാത്രം Hana എന്ന കൗമാരക്കാരിയോട് തന്റെ കഥ പറയുന്നതായിക്കാണിച്ചാണ് നോവൽ ആരംഭിയ്ക്കുന്നത്. അയാൾ അവളുമായി തന്റെ പഴയ കാമുകിയെ(Clara, മിസ്ട്രസ് എന്ന് നോവലിൽ) കാണാൻ പോകുകയാണ്. കഥ തുടങ്ങുമ്പോൾ മരം മുറിയ്ക്കാൻ പോകുന്ന തൊഴിലാളികളെ നോക്കിനിൽക്കുന്ന അയാളെ നമുക്ക് കാണാം. ഒരു രാത്രിയിൽ ദൂരെ കാട്ടിൽ വെളിച്ചം മിന്നുന്നതുകണ്ട്‌ Patrick ഇറങ്ങിക്കിച്ചെല്ലുന്നു. മഞ്ഞിലുറഞ്ഞ തടാകത്തിനുമേലെ ആളുകൾ തെന്നിനടക്കുന്നതാണവൻ കാണുന്നത് - "It was not just the pleasure of skating. They could have done that during the day. This was against the night. The hard ice was so certain, they could leap into the air and crash down and it would hold them. their lanterns replaces with new rushes which let them go further past boundaries, speed! romance! one man waltzing with his fire...". കാട്ടിൽ നിന്ന് വെട്ടിയ തടികൾ നദിയിലൂടെ ഒഴുക്കിക്കൊണ്ടുപോയി മില്ലുകളിൽ എത്തിയ്ക്കുന്നതാണ് ഈ ആളുകളുടെ ജോലി. ഇവർ ഫിൻലൻഡുകാരാണ് എന്ന് അയാൾ മുതിർന്നതിനുശേഷം അറിയുന്നുണ്ട്. അയാളുടെ അച്ഛൻ അവർക്കൊപ്പമാണ് ജോലി ചെയ്തിരുന്നത് - ഒഴുക്കിൽ തടികൾ എവിടെയെങ്കിലും കുടുങ്ങിനിൽക്കുമ്പോൾ ഡയനാമിറ്റ് വച്ച് പൊട്ടിച്ചു തടസ്സം നീക്കലാണ് അയാളുടെ ഉത്തരവാദിത്തം. അച്ഛനിൽ നിന്ന് മകനും അത് ചെയ്യാൻ പഠിക്കുന്നു. പിന്നീട് അച്ഛൻ മരിക്കുന്നതും അത്തരമൊരു സ്‌ഫോടനത്തിലാണ്. മറ്റൊരു ജോലി തേടി പിൽക്കാലത്തു നഗരത്തിലെത്തുന്ന Patrick, Ambrose Small എന്ന കോടീശ്വരന്റെ തിരോധാനത്തെപ്പറ്റി വിവരം ശേഖരിയ്ക്കാൻ വളണ്ടിയർ ആയിപ്പോകുന്നു. അത് ചെയ്യുന്നവർക്ക് ആഴ്ചയിൽ നാല് ഡോളർ കിട്ടും (ഇത് കാലം 1920-കളാണ്, ഇങ്ങനെയൊരു വ്യാപകമായ അന്വേഷണം ശരിക്കും നടന്നിരുന്നു. നോവലിലെ പല പശ്ചാത്തലകഥകളും ചരിത്രമാണ്). അയാളുടെ രണ്ടു സഹോദരിമാരുമായും പിന്നെ കാമുകിയായ Clara-യുമായും Patrick സൗഹൃദത്തിലാകുന്നു("He was drawing out her history with Small, a splinter from a lady's palm"). Clara അല്പകാലത്തിനുശേഷം അവനെപ്പിരിഞ്ഞുപോകുമ്പോൾ തന്റെ ഇഗ്വാനയെ വളർത്താനായി അവനു കൊടുക്കുന്നു. ഈ ബന്ധങ്ങളൊക്കെ എങ്ങനെ ഉണ്ടായിവരുന്നെന്ന് വിശദീകരിക്കുന്നൊന്നുമില്ല കഥാകാരൻ. കഥയിൽ പലയിടത്തും ഇതുപോലുള്ള സന്ദർഭങ്ങളുണ്ട്. ചില കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളും കഥാതന്തുക്കളുമെല്ലാം തുടർച്ചയില്ലാതെയും അവസാനമില്ലാതെയും പോകുന്നുണ്ട്. ഇത്തരത്തിലുള്ള ഒരു വ്യതിചലനമാണ് Temelcoff-ന്റെ കഥ. ഡോൺ എന്ന താഴ്‌വാരത്തിനു കുറുകെ വെള്ളവും മറ്റു അവശ്യ സാധനങ്ങളൂം കൊണ്ടുപോകാനുള്ള വലിയൊരു റെയിൽപ്പാലത്തിന്റെ പണിയിൽ ഏർപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്ന തൊഴിലാളിയാണ് Temelcoff - “Nicholas Temelcoff is famous on the bridge, a daredevil. He is given all the difficult jobs and he takes them. He descends into the air with no fear. He is a solitary. He assembles ropes, brushes the tackle and pulley at his waist, and falls off the bridge like a diver over the edge of a boat. ”. അയാൾ ഭാഗമാകുന്ന ഒരസാധാരണ സംഭവമാണ് ഈ കഥയിൽ വിവരിക്കുന്നത്. പണി നടക്കുന്ന പാലത്തിൽ പെട്ടെന്ന് (എങ്ങനെ എന്നതിന് പ്രാധാന്യമില്ല) കുറെ കന്യാസ്ത്രീകൾ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുന്നു. മഞ്ഞിലൂടെ നടന്നു അവരിലൊരാൾ അറ്റത്തെത്തി താഴേക്ക് വീഴുന്നു. “The man in mid-air under the central arch saw the shape fall towards him, in that second knowing his rope would not hold them both. He reached to catch the figure while his other hand grabbed the metal pipe edge above him to lessen the sudden jerk on the rope. The new weight ripped the arm that held the pipe out of its socket and he screamed, so whoever might have heard him up there would have thought the scream was from the falling figure.” അവിടെ നിന്നു രക്ഷപ്പെടുന്ന അവരിരുവരും പിന്നെ ഒരു ചെറിയ ഭക്ഷണശാലയിലിരുന്നു മദ്യപിക്കുകയും സംസാരിച്ചിരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. മദ്യപിക്കുമ്പോൾ അയാളോർക്കുകയാണ് - “She still hadn’t said a word. He remembered she had not even screamed when she fell. That had been him.”. പതിയെ അയാളുറങ്ങുന്നു. അവൾ അയാളെ നോക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നു. പിന്നെ എണീറ്റ് മുഖം കഴുകാൻ പോകുന്നു - “Leaning forward she lay her face on the cold zinc, the chill there even past midnight. Upon her cheek, her eyelid. She let her skull roll to cool her forehead. The zinc was an edge of another country. She put her ear against the grey ocean of it. Its memory of a day’s glasses. The spill and the wiping cloth. Confessional. Tabula Rasa.”. ഉറങ്ങുന്ന അയാളോട് അവൾ പേര് ചോദിക്കുന്നു, മറുപടിയില്ല. അവൾ അവിടെനിന്നിറങ്ങി നടന്നു മറയുന്നു. അഞ്ചു വർഷങ്ങൾക്കു ശേഷം ജോലിയിൽ നിന്നും കരുതിവച്ച പണം കൊണ്ട് അയാൾ ഒരു ബേക്കറി തുടങ്ങുന്നുണ്ട്. അവിടെ വച്ചാണ് അയാൾ Patrick-മായി കണ്ടുമുട്ടുന്നത്. പിന്നീട് അയാളുടെ കൂടെയാണ് Hana താമസിക്കുന്നത് എന്ന് നമ്മൾ കാണുന്നു. എന്നാൽ Temelcoff-ന്റെ കഥയ്ക്ക് പിന്നെ തുടർച്ചകളില്ല. Patrick, ഒന്റാറിയോ തടാകത്തിന്റെ കീഴെ കുഴിയ്ക്കുന്ന ടണലിന്റെ ജോലിയിൽ ഏർപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നതിന്റെ വിവരണമാണ് പിന്നെ. Harris എന്ന പൊതുമരാമത്ത് ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥന്റെ സ്വപ്ന പദ്ധതിയാണത് (റെയിൽവേപ്പാലവും അയാളുടെ ആശയമായിരുന്നു). കാനഡയിൽ ജോലി അന്വേഷിച്ചെത്തിയ വിദേശികളുമൊത്താണ് Patrick താമസിക്കുന്നത്. Temelcoff ഒരിയ്ക്കൽ അവരിലൊരാളായിരുന്നു, വലിയൊരു സാഹസികയാത്ര കഴിഞ്ഞാണ് അയാൾ അവിടെയെത്തുന്നത് - അതിന്റെ വിവരണം നോവലിന്റെ ആദ്യഭാഗത്തുണ്ട്. Patrick-ന്റെ (ക്ലാര കൊടുത്ത) ഇഗ്വാന പ്രവാസികൾക്കിടയിൽ ഒരു കൗതുകമാണ്. ഒഴിവുവേളകളിൽ അവരെല്ലാവരുംകൂടി നാടകങ്ങൾ കാണാൻ പോകുന്നു. അവർ നാടകം വെറുതെ കാണുകയല്ല, നടൻമാർ പറയുന്ന ഓരോ സംഭാഷണവും ഉച്ചാരണസഹിതം ആവർത്തിച്ചു പറഞ്ഞു പഠിച്ചെടുക്കുകയുമാണ്. “Usually by the end of an east-end production at the Fox or Parrot Theatres the actors’ speeches would be followed by growing echoes as Macedonians, Finns, and Greeks repeated the phrases after a half-second pause, trying to get the pronunciation right. This infuriated the actors, especially when a line such as “Who put the stove in the living room, Kristin?” – which had originally brought the house down – was now spoken simultaneously by at least seventy people and so tended to lose its spontaneity. ” Patrick-ഉം അച്ഛനും സ്ഫോടകവസ്തുക്കൾ തയ്യാറാക്കി ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്, Temelcoff-ഉം കൂട്ടാളികളും പാളത്തിൽ ജോലിചെയ്യുന്നതിന്റെ വിവരണം, Patrick-ഉം സഹപ്രവർത്തകരും തുരങ്കമുണ്ടാക്കുന്നതിന്റെ വിശദാംശങ്ങൾ (അവിടെ അവന്റെ ഡൈനാമിറ്റ് ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നതിലെ പരിചയം ഉപയോഗപ്പെടുന്നു), Patrick പിന്നീട് ഒരു "ടാനറി"യിൽ ജോലിചെയ്യുന്നത്, നോവലിന്റെ മൂന്നാം ഭാഗത്തിൽ വരുന്ന Caravaggio എന്ന മോഷ്ടാവിന്റെ "ജോലി"യുടെ വിവരണം തുടങ്ങി - ആളുകളുടെ തൊഴിലുകളെ അതിന്റെ സൂക്ഷ്മാംശത്തിൽ വിശദീകരിക്കുന്നതു നോവലിലെ മറ്റൊരു പ്രത്യേകതയാണ്. ഇത് മനുഷ്യാദ്ധ്വാനത്തിന്റെ, ഒരു നഗരവും സംസ്കാരവും പടുത്തുയർത്താൻ ചിലവഴിക്കേണ്ടേവന്ന തുച്ഛജീവിതങ്ങളുടെ (ഏതൊരാധുനിക നഗരവും നിർമ്മിച്ചെടുത്തത് അന്യനാട്ടുകാരന്റെ വിയർപ്പിലാണ് എന്നതിന്റെ) കൂടെ കഥയാണ്. ജയിലിൽ വച്ച് Patrick പരിചയപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു കഥാപാത്രമാണ് Caravaggio എന്ന മോഷ്ടാവ്, നോവലിന്റെ മൂന്നാം ഭാഗത്തിൽ അയാളുടെ ജീവിത കഥയുണ്ട് (ഈ കഥാപാത്രം Ondaatje-യുടെ അടുത്ത നോവലായ English Patient -ൽ വീണ്ടും വരുന്നുണ്ട്, Hana-യും). അയാളെ ജയിലിൽ നിന്ന് രക്ഷപ്പെടാൻ Patrick സഹായിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയ Patrick-ഉം Caravaggio-യും ചേർന്ന് തടാകത്തിനടിയിലെ ടണൽ തകർക്കാൻ ശ്രമിയ്ക്കുന്നതാണ് അവസാനഭാഗത്തിലെ കഥ. ഡൈനാമിറ്റ് പലയിടങ്ങളിൽ സ്ഥാപിച്ചശേഷം Harris-ന്റെ മുറിയിലെത്തുന്ന Patrick പക്ഷേ ക്ഷീണവും പരിക്കുകളും കാരണം തളർന്നുറങ്ങിപ്പോകുന്നു (അയാൾ തടാകത്തിൽ നിന്ന് വെള്ളമൊഴുകുന്ന ടണലുകളിലൂടെ നീന്തിയാണ് കനത്ത സുരക്ഷയുള്ള കെട്ടിടത്തിൽ കടക്കുന്നത് ). ടണൽ നിർമ്മാണത്തിനിടെ കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ട ആളുകൾക്കു വേണ്ടി പകരം ചോദിയ്ക്കാനാണ് താൻ വന്നിരിക്കുന്നത് എന്ന് അയാൾ അതിനു മുൻപായി Harris-നോട് പറയുന്നുണ്ട്. മേല്പറഞ്ഞപോലെ ഭാഷയിലാണ് ഈ നോവലിന്റെ ശക്തി കിടക്കുന്നത്. സൂക്ഷ്മമായി നോക്കിയാൽ കഥയിലെ ചിന്നിച്ചിതറിക്കിടക്കുന്ന പല ഭാഗങ്ങളും ഇഴചേരുന്നതായിക്കാണാം - വായനക്കാരന്റെയാണ് ഇവ കണ്ടെടുക്കേണ്ട ഉത്തരവാദിത്തം. ചില ഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ നോവൽ അദ്ധ്വാനിച്ചു തന്നെ വായിക്കേണ്ടി വരുന്നുണ്ട്. എന്നാൽ Ondaatje-യുടെ ഭാഷയുടെ sophistication അത്ര ഉന്നതമാണ്. ടാനറിയിലെ ജോലി കഴിഞ്ഞു പാട്രിക്കും സുഹൃത്തുക്കളും കുളിച്ചു വൃത്തിയാകുന്നതിന്റെ വിവരണം നോക്കുക :- ”They stood under the hot pipes, not noticeably changing for two or three minutes – as if, like an actress unable to return to the real world from a role, they would be forever contained in that livid colour, only their brains free of it. And then the blue suddenly dropped off, the colour disrobed itself from the body, fell in one piece to their ankles, and they stepped out, in the erotica of being made free.” നോവലിന്റെ ആദ്യഭാഗത്തുനിന്ന് അവസാനത്തേക്കെത്തുമ്പോൾ കഥയിൽ നിന്ന് വായനക്കാരന്റെ ശ്രദ്ധ തെറ്റുന്നതും ഇതുകൊണ്ടാണ് (“The first sentence of every novel should be: “Trust me, this will take time but there is order here, very faint, very human.” - ഇങ്ങനെയൊരു വാചകമുണ്ട് നോവലിന്റെ രണ്ടാം ഭാഗത്ത് ). കഥയിലല്ല നോവലിന്റെ ഊന്നൽ, അത് പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിൽ സ്വയം കുറേയൊക്കെ പൂരിപ്പിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്, പക്ഷേ വിശദശാംശങ്ങളിലാണ് നോവലിന്റെ ആത്മാവ്. ഒരുവേള ഹിസ്റ്റോറിക്കൽ ഫിക്ഷൻ പോലെയും നോവൽ പ്രവർത്തിയ്ക്കുന്നു. നോവലിന്റെ പേരിലെ "സ്കിൻ" മനുഷ്യന് വരുന്ന മാറ്റങ്ങളാണ്, ഒരു ജീവി തൊലിപൊഴിക്കുന്നപോലെയാണ് അത് നടക്കുന്നത്. എന്നാൽ മനുഷ്യന് മാത്രമല്ല ടോറോന്റൊ നഗരത്തിനു തന്നെ വരുന്നുണ്ട് ഈ പരിണാമം. അതിന്റെ കൂടെ ചരിത്രവുമുണ്ടാകുന്നു. ആ അർത്ഥത്തിൽ ആഴത്തിലുള്ള രാഷ്ട്രീയം നോവലിലുണ്ട് (ജോലികളുടെ വിശദാംശങ്ങൾ മനഃപൂർവ്വമാണ്, ഒരു ജോലി ചെയ്യുന്നതിലെ അദ്ധ്വാനത്തെ വായനക്കാരനെ അനുഭവിപ്പിയ്ക്കുകയാണ് ഇവിടെ). ഇങ്ങനെയാണ് കേവല "അനുഭൂതി" തലത്തിൽനിന്ന് നോവൽ ഉയരുന്നത്. നോവലിന്റെ രസതന്ത്രത്തിനു കീഴടങ്ങുന്ന വായനക്കാരൻ സ്വയം തോൽ പൊഴിയ്ക്കുകയാണ് എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞാലും അതിശയോക്തിയില്ല. അത്രയ്ക്ക് transformative ആണീ നോവൽ, പുനർവായനയ്ക്കുമുതകുന്ന ഒന്ന്.

I've been a little lukewarm on some Ondaatje, but the language in this one -- especially early on -- really did the trick for me, as did the earlier parts of the story, which was fascinating to me. Some of the later bits appealed to me less, but on the whole, this was a good, quick read.

Most boring book on the planet Earth. This book had no visible plot, no sequence of characters, nothing interesting. Don't read it, whatever you do.
