As India and Pakistan set off to chart their own course and legacy in 1947, both nations needed their own stories, heroes and “histories” for the sake of legitimacy and to brush the ‘inconvenient’ shared history of sacrifice and struggle under the carpet. 
With a mix of informal personal anecdotes, official battle dispatches and an exhaustive account of the power brokers involved, this book does good justice in its attempt to bring that shared history back in focus. 
Undivided India’s contribution to WWII is hugely underrated. And the direct and indirect impact of war in shaping the modern South Asia and India’s global outlook is a topic that deserves more attention.
