The Unabomber

In 1971 Dr. Theodore Kaczynski rejected modern society and moved to a primitive cabin in the woods of Montana. There, he began building bombs, which he sent to professors and executives to express his disdain for modern society, and to work on his magnum opus, Industrial Society and Its Future, forever known to the world as the Unabomber Manifesto. Responsible for three deaths and more than twenty casualties over two decades, he was finally identifed and apprehended when his brother recognized his writing style while reading the 'Unabomber Manifesto.' The piece, written under the pseudonym FC (Freedom Club) was published in the New York Times after his promise to cease the bombing if a major publication printed it in its entirety.

A fascinating combination of interesting, thought-provoking, erratic, pretentious, and a whole lot of "this was clearly written by a man living in a cabin in the woods". Without a doubt one of the most unforgettable things I have read.

this can be seen as the ramblings of a lunatic and is often dismissed like that, but doing so ignores the uncomfortable truths it tells. his critiques of technology’s role in ruining human freedom and autonomy, as well as his quite accurate predictions about modern society, are very difficult to overlook. however, he has taken lives of multiple innocents and the manifesto is deeply tied to its author’s extremist actions, making it a very troubling read. reading it requires critical engagement, as its arguments can be thought provoking but are rooted in a deeply flawed and troubling context. it’s a disturbing but a noteworthy exploration of the tension between technological advancement and human freedom
