Disgusting. Visceral. Made me dissociate.

As it was intended to do. Oyasumi Punpun is a beautifuly bleak, pyschological story following Punpun Onodera, and his life. He is depicted as a non-human entity, so the main focus of his story is entirely on his character, which is incredibly well developed. Punpun is not a likeable person, to put it lightly, and he does not get a standard redemption. I'd normally hate him, but due to the fact that I've read about his childhood, his teenage years, and eventually his journey as an adult, I instead relate to him. It is a well-designed contradiction that makes the reader question their own morality.

One of my favorite parts of this story, which does revolve around Punpun and ultimately, his relationship with Aiko, is that neither of them is entirely a victim. There is no "deer and hunter" dynamic as there constantly is in toxic relationships portrayed by the media. Both Aiko and Punpun abuse eachother; both of them idealize eachother through a twisted and dependent need for saving. This story has changed my life, and I will establish now that I'm not one for exaggerating.

Inio Asano (the author) explores more than complex, co-dependent relationships. Asano also effectively goes into topics of religion, family, economy, and self-sabotage. All of those were executed incredibly well, in ways that made me rethink my entire life.

Though the fact that I was 11 when I first read Oyasumi Punpun probably played a part in its affect on me, I still reread it once a year and find that every time I turn the last page, I have shifted as a person.

Oyasumi Punpun is excellent, but proceed with caution.

A heart wrenching manga that bought me to tears and a feeling of being empty more often than I'd like to admit. It has a very interesting art style u dont usually see except in manga like Uzumaki. I'd definitely recommend it.
