Into the Light

Into the Light

Aleatha Romig2016
Sara Adams awakes blind, unable to remember the most basic details of her life, but her darkness seems a blessing when she discovers the terrors of The Light. Stella Montgomery investigates the news from the mean streets of Detroit, where she's noticed a disturbing trend: young women are vanishing. When her best friend disappears, Stella digs for answers--despite warnings from her police detective boyfriend--following a twisted trail that leads her through the city's most dangerous and forsaken precincts. There she uncovers something more sinister than she could have imagined: a shadowy organization known as The Light, led by the enigmatic Father Gabriel. As Sara struggles to understand her place in the strange world she's awakened to--an oppressive cult demanding unquestioning obedience--and her feelings for Jacob, the husband she can't recall and whose harsh and tender attentions confuse and beguile her, Stella risks all to discover the truth. But enlightenment always comes with a price....

I give up. I can't do it. The main problem I had with this book is that I didn't realize it was tagged as romance until I was halfway through it. I can't read romance, especially not one with a disgusting sadist who abuses his wife, and then thinks that it's insanely hot. I don't care if there is a possibility that this guy is just pretending. It's revolting to read. Honestly, the only way this author/book can make it up to me is if he, along with every single man in this cult, dies in the second book, though I will never know because I do not plan on reading that. It doesn't matter that this is a cult-thriller. There isn't even anything about the cult and its traditions, systems, etc. If that stuff is in the end, then that's too bad; I'm not going to torture myself any longer just to get to the good stuff. I'm DNF-ing this at p. 250 so it makes sense to still add a rating. Anyway, I read the spoilers. I'm okay with not having finished it, though I'll still have my friend explain what happened, so I can wrap my head around the many 5 stars this book has gotten. (Sorry, Katie. Please don't stop giving me recommendations. But the awful truth here is I just cannot read romance, unfortunately.)
