Tommy Pico

Composed as a long text message, this poem asks what happens to a modern, queer indigenous person a few generations after his ancesters were alienated from their language, their religion, and their history.

an epic poem for the internet age- it helped me through a bad break up and for that it will always be special to me. <3 a friend recommended it to me while i was journaling alone at a bar (the friend worked at the restaurant), trying not to let the bartender know that i was crying.

This was one of those "I appreciate what this is doing but don't understand a lot of it" kind of works for me. I definitely feel like I made the right choice in listening to the audiobook and following along the ebook at the same time. Pico narrated the audiobook himself which means listening to it gave me a lot of intonation and emotion that I might not otherwise have gotten from the work. But I absolutely had to follow along with the ebook because the thread of the poem jumped around enough that if I tried just listening to the audiobook my mind would have wandered a lot and I wouldn't have focused totally on the audiobook. I feel like this is a work to revisit in the future to try to tease more out of, but for the moment, I'm glad I read/listened to this.
