Broken April may have done the best job of transporting me into it's setting of any book I've ever read. Getting to familiarize myself with the setting of the plateau through the intertwined stories and taking me down so many different avenues of thought about blood feuds and the Kanun was so fulfilling.

I was worried coming in that being a beginner to learning about Albanian culture and history would end up being a barrier to understanding the story, but Kadare describes the practices in such a human manner that I could understand it from the outset.
