How much I enjoyed the book: 9/10
How good the book was: 8.5/10

I find myself torn whilst writing this review. I loved reading Kindred but the minute I sat down to brainstorm a review, the flaws started flying out one by one. Whilst reading, my subconscious is more than happy to ignore the negatives as long as my personal needs are satisfied! Keeping that in mind, I’m going to include the aforementioned “negatives” but let it be known they don’t mean enough for me to drop the series!

In terms of the story line, only some of the questions I was hoping to have clarified were answered. I was ecstatic to learn more about the Mayfairs – the brothers (and sisters) as well as their parents had intrigued me throughout The Mayfair Moon - yet I didn’t feel like it was enough. I was anticipating a full day spent in the Mayfair household getting to know each member of the family. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case! The focus remained on the elder siblings, which was nice, but not quite what I was hoping for.

On the plus side, a lot more detail is given in relation to the werewolves, their history (which is still not complete) as well as their traditions and customs. It was great to see some order after the chaos in the previous book. On the other hand, I found myself left with even more questions – included those left unattended. With the focus primarily on the Mayfairs, the book provides no updated information about Adria’s sister Alex or her rival wolf pack.

There was definite improvement in the written quality of the book, though I did feel like Adria’s “plot twist” had been evident to everyone but Adria throughout the story. It didn’t have the effect that dramatic irony should, if anything it made me question her intelligence. In spite of this, throughout my reading I felt a growing attachment to the characters and found myself much more invested in their plight. Particularly Adria – she won my heart over with her newly discovered confidence in herself. I love seeing character growth that actually makes sense!

To conclude, despite the flaws I am beyond eager to find out Aramei’s story. We’re left with the biggest cliff hanger (and biggest clue plot-wise!) during her brief scenes. I am beyond eager to read the finale of The Darkwoods Trilogy: The Ballad of Aramei!
