I have to admit that I had super low expectations for this one, and I was suprised in an unexpectedly good way.
Jacqueline Susann’s Valley of the Dolls is one of my favorite contemporary books focused on criticizing and satirizing the entertainment industry —mainly Hollywood—, and it is also the first adult book I remember reading. So, when I found this Sci-Fi work of hers during my summer holidays on 2018, I bought it out of mere curiosity, because this forbidden love between an Earth woman and her alien abductor did sound quite trashy and problematic.
Well, it turned out to be have pseudofeminist, pacifist and intellectually stimulating content, although it was originally written in the FIFTIES! Susann wasn’t able to get it published because publishers thought it wasn’t marketable. However, Yargo ended up getting published in 1979, four years after her death, and it actually became a bestseller right away.
Today’s lesson is not to judge a book by its cover, its blurb or the author’s previous work.
