Ho sempre apprezzato i libri di Jacqueline Wilson, nonostante fossero tutto fuorché leggeri e infantili. Ma questo proprio non mi è piaciuto. La trama è sciatta, con un gran potenziale, ma espresso malissimo. Avrei voluto una Prue più coraggiosa, meno lagna e più matura dei suoi quattordici anni. Avrei voluto una degna conclusione sul rapporto col padre, che invece resta un limbo odioso fatto di lui che balbetta parolacce e lei che non si ribella. Avrei preferito una conclusione seria della storia con il professore, o almeno un epilogo. Invece tutto il libro è solo una lunga e imbarazzante parentesi su una ragazzina che si trova a saper disegnare, con un padre psicologicamente violento e un'indole di gelatina. Mi sarebbe piaciuto vedere la madre crescere meglio come personaggio e anche Toby, che sembra avere una parte per caso. In generale è stato una perdita assoluta di tempo, due ore e mezza passate a leggere una storia brutta e senza conclusione. Per quanto abbia amato Lola Rose, nonostante non capissi alcuni dei suoi comportamenti (tipo la camminata tirata a lucido), la caratterizzazione di Prudence al confronto è completamente decentrata. Sbaglia ma non si redime,si comporta da bambina e quando le viene fatto notare si comporta in modo ancora più infantile. Arrivata in una scuola nuova, dove nessuno la conosce e soprattutto, dopo aver sempre studiato in casa, mi sarei aspettata curiosità, non arroganza. Quindi, se da un lato ho odiato il personaggio di Prudence (e di conseguenza il libro stesso) e la scelta del finale, ho apprezzato il background realistico, la caratterizzazione dei personaggi secondari e lo stile tipico della Wilson. Ma per me resta uno dei libri peggiori che abbia mai letto.

Its a good book but a bit weird that its targeted towards children.

Yeah don’t read this book. Glorifies a relationship between a teacher and a student, and ends with the student getting punished and the teacher having no consequences. How this ever got published is beyond me. For any parents deciding whether it’s suitable it isn’t, especially for kids under 14, because it barely touches on why the relationship was wrong. I read this when I was 11 and thought it was a love story because there was nothing saying that it wasn’t. This book is incredibly dangerous considering how popular the writer is and her usual audience.

I basically grew up reading Jacqueline Wilson’s books. But, in my opinion, this wasn’t up to her usual standard. I adored Rax and Prudence’s relationship, but there chemistry had something missing in it. I was already 100 pages into the story but I didn’t find anything in the plot exciting. During like the climax of the book, I kind off found Prudence annoying. But overall, it was fine.
