The New Child British Art and the Origins of Modern Childhood, 1730-1830

Published in conjunction with an exhibition of the same name organized by the University Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, Berkeley, California, and slated for several destinations during 1995 and 1996. Curator Steward, a specialist in 18th- and 19th- century art, explores the visual representation of children at a time when childhood first came to be valued as a special and distinct phase of human life. Through the work of artists such as Hogarth, Reynolds, Gainsborough, Blake, and Lawrence, he examines the complex relationship between the visual arts and social values.
