Definitely the best of the quartet. The case wasn't as gory as the previous novels and you were able to actually get involved in the lives of the investigating officers. They weren't always likable but their motives were laid out and made sense. It was slow-moving but extremely rewarding at the end.

I stopped reading at 70% because, in all honesty, I don't care who committed the crime. The book is easy to read which surprised me. There is loads of racism, homophobia, misogyny, corruption, police brutality, all the good things we can expect from a story set in the 50s. None of that really bothered me nor did it put me off reading. However, I reached a point where I didn't care for the political games and the drama anymore. The story seems to be repeating the same things over and over again from the point of view of different characters. And then I question myself: do I want to read 100 pages more just to discover who's behind it all? No, I don't. I don't care anymore. Bottom line, I didn't find the book bad or hard to read, I think it's just to much time to develop.
