Coffee guru James Hoffmann runs Square Mile Coffee, as well as creating extremely informative, and popular, kit and coffee reviews for his YouTube and Instagram channels. In his latest book he demonstrates everything you need to know to make consistently excellent coffee at home, including: what kit is worth buying, and what isn't; how to grind coffee; the basics of brewing for all major equipment (cafetiere, aeropress, stovetop etc); understanding coffee drinks, from the cortado to latte; the perfect espresso; and taking it to the next level - home roasting.

This book is brilliant. I had great expectations considering this was written by the legend James Hoffmann, but it didn’t disappoint.

I consider particularly difficult to find someone who, being an expert on a subject, still have the ability to communicate so well about its matter of expertise in a way that’s not only informative, but also gives you with the appetite for more. Not because you feel like that’s not enough, but because it gives you the enough information to broaden your knowledge and still open new threads in case you find them interesting.

I found some topics particularly interesting. One about the best water for brewing coffee, some tips to develop better tasting skills, and the one about espresso. This last one was so on point that has made me question myself whether having an espresso machine is really something I need at home.

I highly recommend this book regardless of how much you know about coffee as I’m sure you’ll still learn something from it.
